Water coming back on in Dublin - but three nights of restrictions to go

The water shortage is not believed to have affected emergency services last night on what is usually one of the busiest nights of the year for call-outs.

THE WATER SUPPLY is returning to normal in the greater Dublin area this morning following the second night of restrictions by local authorities.

Despite warnings in advance, the water shortage is not believed to have affected emergency services last night on what is usually one of the busiest nights of the year for call-outs. However businesses have strongly criticised the length and the timing of the restrictions.

Dublin City Council has said that the situation will be reviewed daily but that restrictions will remain in place until at least Monday. The Council said engineers are ‘working around the clock’ to identify the cause of the problem and to mitigate the effects.

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said that the communication of the problem “could have been handled better”.

He said the problem was one that engineers have not “seen or experienced before” and that while “everything possible” is being done, he could not guarantee that the restrictions will be lifted by next Monday.

The water restriction lasts from 8 o’clock at night until 7 o’clock in the morning, but Dublin City Council has warned that it takes some time for water to return to all areas, depending on their location.

Local authorities have stressed that there is no problem with the quality of drinking water but advised that water may appear cloudy or white due to air in the water supply.

Popular Dublin restaurant Camden Kitchen tweeted a photograph (above) showing the colour of tap water just before the water supply was switched off.

Dublin City Council, which has been giving information on behalf of the four local authorities involved said the serious production problem at the Ballymore Eustace water treatment plant is ongoing.

Were you affected by the water restrictions? Talk about it in the comments.

“Boil it and the air will be driven out and it’ll be perfectly clear”

Will the council pay for the electricity to boil kettles of water every day if it’s not clear?

Also, when we are forced to pay for water and road works result in the water being brown, will Irish Water give an allowance in your bill for the water you have to waste running the tap until the water is clean. I’ll give you one guess!

Just rang the Dublin City Council area office for the Crumlin area to inquire about the fact that @ 9.30am there’s still no water coming through our system, whether it be blue, cloudy, brown, pink or clear water! Now told it could be 10.30am before some residents have water coming through their system due to their particular area being charged up, what that means I don’t know! Initially ill-informed that restrictions would be from 8pm-7am, as the days go on, all I can now see is a smaller window to use drinkable water, adequate water for washing machines and showers etc…. What I’d like to know is exactly what is the problem and is this the start of continual water interruptions/restrictions? DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON WATER CHARGES! PAY FOR THIS? DON’T THINK SO!

I think the ELECTRIC being cut off and then not being able to use anything without the use of ELECTRICITY and therefore not paying for the ELECTRIC when it’s off is totally different to paying for WATER-CHARGES and still paying that WATER-CHARGE when there’s disruption to your water supply, especially when a massive percentage of our water system infrastructure is antiquated and there are constant leaks that let’s face it, we will still be paying for, not paying to fix either! Now, jog on, there’s a good lad!

Why don’t you post something sensible instead of coming across as a cowardly snob and trying to put down one of the strongest, proudest communities within Dublin! Now if only you came out from behind your avatar, I’d gladly pay for a bucket of water to be chucked over you! Look forward to your mature (cowardly) response!

That water is just full of small air bubbles. It happens when water mains are turned off. The bubbles dissipate after a minute or so. It’s not blue, but the whiteness of the bubbles are possibly reflecting a blue colour in the room.

In my part of this small island our water is regularly white and cloudy, this is caused from water being turned off for any given reason (burst water pipe being main one.)
You let the water sit for a minute until clear then it’s perfectly fine for drinking. That’s what the council says anyway! At least we’re not paying for it YET.

Same where I am! But I’ve tried letting a glass of water sit until it clears and then drinking it, and it is absolutely disgusting with an almost chemical taste to it. Even after boiling, we can still taste it in our tea and coffee. My dogs won’t even drink it, and believe me they’re not fussy about what they eat and drink!
But like someone else said, it’ll all be grand once we’re paying for it eh?

I completely don’t believe your dogs won’t drink the water after the air bubbles have settled. There are absolutely no added chemicals in any way shape or form when the water goes like that, it is solely down to the air bubbles. Stop being an attention seeker.

When this happens my dogs, namely my labrador, refuses to drink and gets physically sick unless I give her different water. It tastes totally different compared to when there’s no air in the system.
