TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY is “being seriously talked about” in relation to taking over as either head of the European Commission or the European Council, according to Transport Minister Leo Varadkar,
Speculation here and in Europe centres on Kenny and Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen as well as a number of others being in the running for the race to be the next president of the Commission – a role held by Jose Manuel Barroso since 2004 – when the position becomes vacant next June.
Kenny is also speculated to be in the mix for the role of president of the European Council – currently Herman van Rompuy – when that position becomes available in December 2014.
Varadkar told RTÉ’s Marian Finucane programme that although he has not heard if Kenny is interested in the roles – and he would be surprised if the Taoiseach did decide to make the switch to Europe – he is not surprised his name is being mentioned.
“I am not surprised that he’s being seriously talked about because he is,” he said.
“He is very much in the top three or four that people talk about and that’s I suppose down to his performance as president when we had the [EU] presidency and also what’s at least perceived in Europe, if not in Ireland, of a success story here in Ireland.”
The Minister added: “So he is definitely one of the ones who’s being approached. Whether he’d like to do it, I don’t know. I think he wants to finish the job here quite frankly, but that for him to answer.”
Speaking to RTÉ last September, Enda Kenny said he was “flattered” to be linked to the job of European Commission president but added that intends to fulfil his mandate as Taoiseach.

Of course it’s all academic for him as here in Finland there has been no need for any austerity to speak of.

All money loaned out by banks originates in a very small number of large merchant banks. They lend money to all banks and governments. So any bank being bailed out by a government is essentially then paying it on to the bigger wholesale lenders.

I spend a considerable amount of time on a daily basis observing the vomit inducing bile and intellectually bankrupt rubbish being thrown at our democratically elected Leaders of our country who govern in the worst of times for the benefit do our Society. They do it mostly from a sense of public service and many give up careers and vocations that would earn them much less in financial terms or create a considerably improved quality of life from a personal stress perspective.
I know I should just ignore the urge to comment but nature gets the worse of me and I feel compelled to defend the status quo and honour and integrity and decency.
You see Mike I was brought up by parents who believed in personal responsibility and respectability. They would never express themselves in the vulgar and morally reprehensible way that you do. They wouldn’t write in the manner if a street creature as that wouldn’t be respectable and that’s the kernel of it Mike and that’s what causes me to react in such a direct manner.

Wasn’t Bertie a dead cert to take one of these positions several times when he was Taoiseach? The Sindo and others had him down as a certainty, but he never got them in the end. It is media hype more than anything I’d say. The Sindo references unnamed sources.
Realistically, there are a number of things that would make Kenny an unlikely choice. As far as I know, Kenny only speaks English and Irish compared to Barrosso with his English, French, Spanish, German and Portuguese.
Also I really don’t think he would necessarily be interested in moving to Brussels. I think he would much rather stay on the domestic scene and run in the next election, to try and achieve a second consecutive FG term.
Although the selection convention for the EPP is being held in Dublin next year. And if he is in consideration for any, then I’d say the European Council head would be his choice more so than the Commission head.

Yes, Bertie was a shoo in for a newly created European president position according to the Irish media. At the same time Blair was a shoo in for the same job according to the British media. It’s a tactic designed to give the impression that while a leader may be unpopular domestically, externally they are seen to be doing a great job, therefore adding more legitimacy to unpopular, or often frankly incorrect, decisions.

No Michael, I mean something like the Guardian where the authors of articles select some comments which add to the debate. Have a look at their website and see what I mean. I get bored skimming through the dross comments (Richie Rodgers or one of his aliases verses everyone else, all trading childish insults at one another).
The “thumb” system means only stupid comments or racist ones seem to get voted to the top. They might be funny occasionally but they never add anything extra to an article. I’d like to see comments which add something extra to the story selected, perhaps linking to a study or adding a personal experience rather than the schoolyard style behavior of the keyboard warriors who dominate this site.

All I did was post my own analysis on the realpolitik of this story, listing some reasons why I think it is unlikely that Kenny will fill either of the two jobs talked about in the article. In return I got various bits of abuse thrown at me and attacks from trolls as well.
It seems anybody on this site who does not fall in to the pessimistic, angry mob which attacks everything and everyone is attacked. Personally I support some things the government does and I don’t support other things. Of course that means I get attacked for being an FGer when in fact I am not and actually commended some of SF’s budget proposals. Being independent of the rabble on this site is a bad thing it seems.

The comments on this site are hilarious, people jumping on the bandwagon thinking they know better than all the politicians and economists… This site represents a certain type of individual and nothing more, people who have an average job and an average life who feel they need to stand out somehow and do so by getting on their high horse and complaining about the economy and EU financial policy, thinking they could do a better job than the whole EU political system.. He’s done a fantastic job, all credit to the man, despite what all the posts here are saying. We’re pretty much on target to get out of this pretty crap situation we’re in, he took over a mess, and ESRI forecasts 5% growth next year – that’s huge economically if it happens, and it’ll be down to two years of stability and some decent reforms.
Wouldn’t be surprised if he was offered a European job, but I doubt he’d take it if still Taoiseach. And if the turnaround happens this year, he’ll still be Taoiseach in 2020

He has no power. If the banking crisis happened under FG, they would have done the very same thing as FF. They are both centre right parties who look after the merchants classes.
