Dublin City Council passes motion to call Hogan and Irish Water before it

Councillors heard from the City Engineer at a meeting tonight, the first since restrictions were imposed last week.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL has unanimously passed a motion to call the Environment Minister and executives from the State’s new water body, Irish Water, before it in the coming weeks.

The motion, proposed by Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Fitzpatrick, was passed with cross-party support at the first city council meeting since four local authorities in Dublin were forced to restrict water supply last week.

This has been due to problems at the Ballymopre Eustace treatment plant which means restrictions – between 8pm and 7am – are likely to be in place until Thursday.

Dublin City Engineeer, Michael Phillips, informed the council that it will be 10 years before an alternative water source to support the capital is in place.

He also hit back at criticism from the Restaurants Association of Ireland over the shortages, saying that businesses who comply with conditions, such as having a 24-hour water supply on site and not connecting appliances to the mains, should not have problems.

Earlier Phillips said that production at the Ballymore Eustace plant have improved thought they are still 20 per cent below the required level to meet daily demand.

The motion which councillors passed tonight stated:

Dublin City Council call on the Department of the Environment and Irish Water to come before them at a specially convened City Council meeting and to outline their plans for a new water source and other infrastructure improvements required to secure the water supply in Dublin City. This meeting should take place in a reasonable period of time not exceeding 60 days.

As a result the City Manager is to issue invitations to the Minister Phil Hogan and Irish Water to come before the council to discuss the current water problems and the future of supply to the capital.

City Manager is acting on the wishes of our histrionic council. If I was Hogan, I’d give them a wide berth.

They’re going to have some job finding Irish Water boss John Tierney. He is doing an “enda” and gone into hiding since being appointed to the €200,000 per year job by Phil “The Bully” Hogan

Not only that but essentially the government are asset stripping, the LAs will have nothing left for the banks to take if they go after the billions owed.
In 2007 they spent more on parks and libraries that they did on water supply.

Large Strategic Infrastructure Application under the P&D Act 2000 straight to ABP to divert massive water volume from the river Shannon (& its tributaries) to a massive purpose built resuvior in the east Midlands & then on to Dublin City/GDA by underground pipeline. The application compiled by group of retained ‘consultant’ Engineers – rather than the educated & experienced ‘Engineers’ that are actually on the payroll of Irish Water – it will be a perfect display of a ass covering exercise at great expense to the metered public!
This application will attempt to justify the draining of large areas around the river Shannon (& its tributaries) for the purpose of supplying the daily water needs of a population situated on the East coast of the Island. No doubt the application will contain a EIS (again compiled & signed off by a expensive ‘Engineers’ who will not be employed by the applicant) in which an attempt will be made to suggest that the environmental impacts on the Shannon basin is minimal and that any adverse affects which might be acknowledged is justified by the Common Good. Opposition will gather from all Local Fisheries/Tourism/Farming groups/Co-Operatives & rural organisations – North & South who will and should look for an indemnity from IW that the content of any environmental report is accurate & should any detrimental effects to their environment be evident by such a infrastructural development a appropriate recourse is made available for compensation.

    billy,
if dcc fixed their pipes they’d be no need to take water from the Shannon, also with charges people won’t be wasting water.

Even if DCC get permission in 3 years time an appeal to Europe will set dcc’s plans back 10 years.

The entire process may take 5-7 years to get through the ‘Irish Planning Process’ & the High/Supreme/European Court appeals process – the former City Manager never seem to have the time or the motivation to start the process before he jumped ship to his top chair ‘national’ IW job – rate payers were to busy looking for fire works at new years & the DC Councillors are still not aware of SI legislation provision
