The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: Anger over suggestions that Rachel Peavoy’s flat wasn’t freezing; another Gardagate tape emerges in Mayo; and is Keano heading down under?

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know by 9am.

1. #RACHEL PEAVOY: The family of Rachel Peavoy are angry over the coroner’s suggestion at her inquest that her flat “wasn’t freezing” at the time she died. The family’s solicitor, Teresa Gavin, said the family wanted the Minister for the Environment to investigate what had occurred “in the Ballymun regeneration programme” and what had happened at the block of flats at Shangan Road where Rachel died, the Examiner reports.

2. #DEIRDRE McCARTHY: A 39-year-old man is due to appear in Ennis District court today in connection with the violent death of Deirdre McCarthy. He was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after being discharged from Galway University Hospital, where he underwent treatment for injuries which were apparently self-inflicted, it’s reported today.

3. #RONAN KERR: A 26-year-old man is still in custody in the north in connection with the car bomb that killed PSNI officer Ronan Kerr. The Mirror reports this morning that the arrest came “after police sezied a huge weapons haul, primed and ready to kill”.

4. #CORRIB: The women who were allegedly the subject of sexually offensive remarks by gardaí who had arrested them while they were protesting at Corrib are due to make a formal complaint to the Garda Ombudsman today. They also plan to hold a press conference in Dublin this morning at which calls for a public inquiry are to be made.  But the Independent reports that if anyone’s likely to end up in court over the incident, it won’t be the gardaí.

5. #MAYO GARDAI: Another compromising recording has emerged this morning, allegedly involving gardaí in Mayo. Protester John Monaghan claims he has a tape recording in which a garda made remarks of a sexually abusive nature to Monaghan’s wife, the Irish Times reports.

6. #NEWS AGGREGATION: RTÉ is planning to offer members of the National Newspapers of Ireland – effectively Ireland’s biggest newspaper publishers – the opportunity to aggregate free and prepared clips from its news bulletins on their websites. The move comes amidst a row over the broadcaster’s commercial digital media activities, the Irish Times reports.

7. #KEANO: The Irish Daily Star reports that Roy Keane is in talks to take up a job in Australia as head of soccer club, Melbourne Victory.

8. #FINGLETON: Sinn Fein’s Pearse Doherty wants a picture of Michael Fingleton that’s hanging in the Dáil bar to be taken down, the Irish Independent reports, saying it sends out the wrong impression.

9. #DRY YOUR EYES: But if you thought Irish politicians were embarrassing, be glad you don’t have to contend with Nick Clegg. In his latest embarrassing interview – this time with New Statesman – the British deputy PM has admitted that he often cries to music because he’s so fed up with being the British nation’s object of derision – and even his sons ask why everyone hates him, the Telegraph reports. The interview follows another toe-curling encounter with Piers Morgan for GQ magazine three years ago, in which he admitted to having had “no more than 30” previous lovers.

This is bad news for Ireland, it always amazed me how Britain gets away with there status in Europe. They don’t want to accept rules or fiscal plans laid out by Europe or get involved regarding the currency but they gain all the perks that are only suppose to benefit European countries.

They are not part of the Euro for a start;they use their veto for the benefit of their citizens, they also only ratify treaties that are suitable for them. Finally they don’t feel the need to do the bidding of France or Germany to be treated like attention seeking children.

What perks are we talking about Mr Know?Britain bunged us 7 billion at a very favourable interest not so long ago. They’re the best friend Ireland has. Remember that before you make disparaging comments about them.

Norway are not even members and they get most of the perks, with none of the drawbacks. I’m not advocating that we exit the EU merely expressing my derision of States that seem to be playing from a different rule book than us.

Britain pay over 9bn a year into EU. FTT is complicated , in essence designed to raise money on transactions and is seen as a way of generating some money from the financial sector (allegedly to make them pay their share for the financial crisis ) , as the UK are staying out ,there is some risk to jobs in the financial sector in Ireland , although the EU have now introduced it in a way that means the tax on the transaction applies regardless of where you locate the trader to reduce the fear or jobs migrating. Ireland is not against the principle but is holding out due to the UK position , there is money generated for participating countries- but in Ireland we already pay a tax on trades which would be replaced by FTT .Many fear that if it works it could be the beginning of a road to euro taxation harmony down the road- something we don’t want as our low corporate rates might then be scrapped obviously making us less appealing to FDI etc….

It’ll be brought in yet anyhow. Either by consensus of the government in exchange for something else, or forced upon us by the EU because they have our best interests at heart…. And we ARE a special case ! ! !

Finally democracy takes some control of the predatory banks. All should implement this measure as a moral imperative. Let’s hope this spreads and becomes the norm.

No chance of this coming in here for the simple reason that the banks make banking policy in Ireland, not Noonan.
