In the wake of the storm: Before and after photos of Irish bar show extent of Philippines devastation

The tiny island of Malapascau, and the ‘Evolution’ resort run by Irishman David Joyce, were in the direct line of the storm when Haiyan hit nine days ago.

THE ISLAND OF of Malapascau, in Cebu Province, is just 2.5km long. It was a ‘direct hit’ when Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines.

The photos here show the ‘Craic House’ — an Irish-themed bar and restaurant attached to the Evolution Diving resort on the island.

The owners of the company, including Irishman David Joyce, have been spearheading the relief effort in the area for the past nine days — raising cash through an internet appeal and delivering emergency and building supplies to locals in the area, which Joyce says was “completely flattened”.

The above photo was posted on the company’s Facebook yesterday with the title ‘Typhoon Relief of a different kind’.

Pictured are instructors Dannie Holmstedt and Nick Greenop alongside “committed typhoon aid workers Mike and Douglas who decided to spend the final 2 weeks of their holiday helping Malapascua”.

TheJournal.ie has been in contact with David Joyce via email over the last few days. We’ll have the full story up early tomorrow morning.

Donate via Evolution Diving if possible, as they are there for life and the help goes directly to those on the ground https://www.facebook.com/evolutiondivingmalapascua. David is not rebuilding his bar, he is putting the funds towards feeding others and rebuilding the communities.

It would be one thing if they were sitting on their ass sulking over their bar, but they’re not. They are doing the typical Irish thing and doing the rounds helping out the neighbours. They are doing what they can for their area.

I think you will find ‘sheeple’ is a term more associated with brainwashed clowns who digest everything they read and see on the media as the ‘truth’ ‘Sheeple’ will agree with everything a reporter tells them and is unable to come up with their own idea about anything.

    Hi all,

Clearly there’s been quite a bit of negative feedback here. I’d like to provide some context for the use of the picture, and the way the story is presented.

I was put in contact with David Joyce, who runs the Evolution resort, on Monday. The resort, along with the pictured bar and restaurant, were flattened in the storm.

David, along with other staff members at the dive school, has been raising thousands of euro, and taking the lead in getting aid and building supplies directly to the surrounding community over the past week or so.

I’ll have the full piece on their efforts up tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I’ve posted this photo, and a second picture taken before the storm hit, as a way of showing the immense structural damage caused by the typhoon.

As stated in the piece, holidaymakers who were at the resort have also stayed and helped out with the relief effort.

Those pictured in the photo had just spent several hours clearing debris from the area, in much the same manner as their neighbours in surrounding businesses and households.

There is no intention to portray anybody involved here as ignoring or making light of the disaster.

It’s my personal opinion that, no matter how stressed by the situation they were, the men were merely smiling because — well, that’s what you tend to do when someone points a camera at you.

Once again, the full piece with David will be up tomorrow morning, which includes much more detail about the staff members’ efforts.

Ways to donate to the Malapascau relief drive are outlined on the Evolution Facebook page — just follow the link above. Obviously, there are plenty of other ways to donate to the international relief effort.

    Thanks for reading,

    Daragh Brophy.

You have obviously never been tested as a person in such circumstances. You have your whip around in the school and the local pub. Leave those guys alone to help pick up theirs and their neighbours lives. They don’t need the help of the likes of you as they’ll pull their own bootstraps up.

Cecilia, you are so wrong in so many counts. You obviously have never been through an event even remotely similar to this, and hopefully never will. I have, hurricane Charley, Punta Gorda fl. Not even remotely the same in terms of loss of life but in terms of personal devastation….the same. These guys are doing exactly the same as we and many of our neighbors did….. Look on the bright side, “we have NOTHING, it can only get better”, they are helping themselves and their neighbors. By the way, when PG was devastated the first business to “reopen”, despite it too being trashed, was an Irish pub owned by Kevin Doyle it was important on two levels, one a place for people to connect and two to have a pint and pretend things were normal……..

I can’t see anything wrong with the first photograph… apart from the obvious, the bar being destroyed. Good guys working to help people around them despite their business being in ruins. A couple of holiday makers staying on to help with the clean up when they could have been on the first plane out of there.

    Darragh deleted my comment because

    A) I said the photo was distasteful
    B) Because I said it showed Irish people drinking, smiling, in the middle of a natural disaster
C)Because I said that people think the leading photo is not tasteful now, and will not change their mind tomorrow
    D) I said “End of…”

Yet, this guy deleted my comment! Now, albeit he might disagree with my comment which is fare enough, but why would he delete it?

This is the gutter journalism you are up against here folks. Granted, I may disagree with some of you guys and vice versa, but what kind of a ‘news’ website are we on that the author of a controversial article deletes at will any comment who disagrees with him? Seriously, think about that for a moment….this guy is so insecure in his journalism that he feels he can post something on a public forum and be God almighty when people disagree with him.

The last time I checked this is Ireland, not China…if you are going to be so naive as to lead a story with the photo you choose, expect people (your paymasters) to agree and disagree!

Just who or what do you think you are?

@Cecilia, I, Noel, and a few others have been in contact with Matt and David since the devastation happened, they are tired, homeless and working their bollix’s off helping others in the Island, they don’t give a Bollix about rebuilding the bar, they merely took a picture of themselves having a warm beer to let friends, family and others know that they are alive and fighting on.

I brought David’s plight to Daragh in order to generate much needed publicity about their ongoing efforts, AND YES, If they want a hard earned warm beer after what they have seen and lost, good for them. Meanwhile whilst you type crap, I will continue to generate funds, collect building equipment and send it directly to them. If you have anything that you want to send over please contact http://www.speedypinoy.com as they will send the box FOC to them. They need building equipment, vitamins, sanitary wear, everything that you can donate.

They are a credit and we should help them as much as possible, they are putting everything into helping others, from David “Tools for sure is great. We are managing to get materials onto the island but logistics is getting harder which is probably good. All trucks are booked up meaning stuff is now happening. We will get lots of wood and roofing there tomorrow. I will probably budget for a load of local workers to get involved. While in Ireland a carpenter might donate his time most people here cannot afford that so I will hire 20 guys and send them around.”

If I have one criticism of the Journal is that most of the comments below have not just been deleted. Those guys are doing a job there that most of the plonkers who are posting could not do. Working with people who have lost everything and most likely helping them to collect the bodies of their dead families is not easy and having a pint or two afterwards is a damn sight better than whinging and ending up on valium or whatever.
The ability to keep smiling in the face of disaster is what helps those involved in all types of rescue work keep going and cope with the horror.
Well done those lads, give them your full and unqualified support and eff the begrudgers.

This Guy has lost everything, his business, his home, everything and he is out there raising thousands, directly helping in the relief, the clean up, probably helping to gather the bodies of friends and people he would have seen on a daily basis and all the keyboard warriors sitting here, not knowing how terrifying it is to be in the eye of such a huge storm and the relief of making it through alive, making stupid, pointless comments about having a beer! Did you see the before and after picture of his business!? Until you have been there and have directly seen first hand the scale and tragedy of this storm, keep your bloody negative comments to yourself! Trolling on this is a new low!

What’s even more frightening is some people’s lack of ability to read, basic primary school comprehension here would give you the general gist of the story. Then, to highlight their stupidity, they have to rant on about a picture here.

The guys in the picture are raising money and helping in the relief effort. How do we know that they haven’t been working their socks off all day in fund raising and rebuilds and were just relaxing with a few beers. Maybe they are smiling in the picture because of a fulfilling day helping others.

I agree gary and I think it’s wonderful so many Irish want to help these poor people out it’s horrible what is going on there but I wonder why we are not as good at helping ourselves or other Irish , it alway’s takes a tragedy abroad to motivate us into action …as much as I applaud helping in anyway we can . we need to hang onto that energy and try to stop some of the awful thing’s going on at home …like children going hungry ect…aparently 20% , it’s not as desperste as what people over there are suffering and of course they need to be helped first , but would love to see Irish rally around each other as much

Posts here seem a bit extreme. There is a link to pledge money in the article. I trust everyone has done so, given that everyone seems so adamant that in the aftermath of disaster, no-one is allowed to have fun, and images depicting fun are in bad taste to the extent that a mass boycott is the only thing to do. The article is about people out there helping, tied in with an Irish business out there, or have I missed a trick?

Fair play to the many volunteers and to those pictured for helping in the relief effort, by no means an easy task having viewed reports from the effected region. If a picture paints a thousand words what does this one say? What do we see? A group of guys standing round a bar laughing while in every news channel and paper we see survivors wandering round dazed and starving and rescue people trying to dig bodies out from the ruins?

He is now homeless himself, but they are safe. Everything that they are doing is to help others. Hopefully in the future funds will go toward rebuilding the school and feeding more, he is doing everything for others.

Can an admin or moderator please ask her to tone down her language and stop asking for people to be sacked. Lots of people have already posted asking her to please delete the free app that gives her access to free news. Some people have offered her advice on how to do so. Can someone explain clearly that her immoderate comments are offensive to others who don’t share her views. And tell her that since more than one person is involved in running a newspaper, she shouldn’t be so pesonal.
