Senator Jimmy Harte stayed while working in Dublin in a family owned property in this area. Furthermore he has a family in a very distressed state at his bedside. He is a doting father and a committed family person. If this happened to your father how would you like to see such needless and unnecessary commentary.

Exactly. So glad you made that comment Colm. People need to consider the family first of all and not make jokes or ill-conceived political protests while a man is ill is hospital.

Not only do I hope that Harte recovers, and recovers well, but I also really do hope that there was nothing sinister in this incident.

I think the Journal should not allow comments on this story, a man is in hospital very ill and some of the comments above are out of order.

Newmarket square, why is it rough. Lived there for 5 years and never had any hassle and I always walked home after a night out. Anyway. Hope he recovers. The cobble stones are very slippy around there when wet.

Not sure why people think its rough… Perhaps because of its close proximity to Cork St and even at that I’m not so sure it’s that bad.

I live beside Newmarket Sq and never had any hassle, cycled through there sometime around 4am last night and saw nothing out of the ordinary, hope it was after all this and I didn’t fail to notice the poor man lying there.

Fair play to Journal.ie for reacting so quickly to take down the seriously defamatory comment on this thread that was brought to their attention. The depth to which some people will stoop in attacking a public servant who has suffered serious injuries is truly quite despicable. Strong moderation is essential at such times and J.ie has shown that.

Sickened by some of the comments here. I know nothing about the man’s politics, nor do I care, except his father was well respected for attempting to reconcile the warring factions on this island and I believe he has a wife and four children who must be beside themselves with worry. Certainly not the time for political point scoring. Maybe if we had a little bit more compassion for all our fellow citizens we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in.
