Elian Gonzalez blames US laws for his childhood ordeal

Gonzalez became the centre of a major battle between the US and Cuba in 1999 when he was saved from a boat which overturned on the way to Florida. His mother died during the journey.

ELIAN GONZALEZ, WHO at age six sparked an international custody battle that ended in his dramatic return to Cuba, has blamed a US law for his mother’s death in a new interview published today.

In November 1999, Gonzalez was plucked from the sea off Florida’s coast after an overcrowded motorboat capsized en route from Cuba, killing his mother and 10 others seeking to enter the United States illegally.

His Florida relatives fought to keep him in the United States, but his father demanded he be returned.

The event culminated on June 30, 2000, when heavily-armed US agents broke into the Miami home of Gonzalez’s uncle on orders of then-US attorney-general Janet Reno to return the boy to Cuba.

“They were very sad moments for me, which marked me for life,” Gonzalez said today in an interview with the local weekly Giron and published on the cubadebate.cu web site.

“It never gave me the chance to think of my mother, who died in the sea as a result of the Cuban Adjustment Act” he said, referring to a 1966 US law that says any Cuban who reaches the United States by any means will be allowed to stay and work.

Havana has called the law “murderous” and blamed it for encouraging people to board rickety boats to cross the Florida straits in the hopes of reaching the US coast — a process that has left thousands dead.

Reflecting on the events after he reached Miami, Gonzalez, who turns 20 in December, said he “suffered the consequences of the Act.”

He said his basic rights as a child — “the right to be with my father, the right to maintain my nationality and remain in my cultural context” — were also violated until he was finally returned to his father by court order.

But he emphasised “our struggle is not against the American people, it is against their government. He said:

From the moment Americans knew of my case, they took to the streets to call for me to be sent back to my country.

Elian’s return to Cuba was a huge boon to then-leader Fidel Castro, as illegal emigration is an embarrassing everyday reality in the only one-party communist state in the Americas.

It’s useful as local ID (driving licence, at least the paper version, is laughed at in most places if you try to use it as ID) and saves carrying around your full passport.

A lot of countries require you to carry identification at all times, e.g. national ID card.
This I assume would fulfil that requirement and is a lot easier than carrying a full passport.

The E.U. is on its death bed due to greedy politicians and banks, so what is the use of it then?
You have to buy a passport in order to buy this, it is like paying twice to have a passport, if they have money to burn then it is up to them but it is just more money for the government to waste?

Ho ho, people do not like the true about the E.U. propaganda machine, the BBC got 22 million over 5 years to be pro E.U. in their news stories and the E.U. spent 664 million in self propaganda in 2014.

I am worried about the following as well…
“Electricity customers will face fines if they do not allow smart meters to be installed in their homes. Smart meters are due to be installed in at least 80 per cent of homes by 2020, to comply with EU targets. The total cost of the project is estimated at €750 million. ”
Another thing from the E.U. for you all…

This is very useful if your hotel doesn’t have a room safe or if your are travelling on business and flying back the same day. Many countries are now accepting these for visa free travel not just in the EU/EEA/Switzerland. I believe that the passport card is valid ID in Canada and the USA except for entry at the border.
