Fire breaks out at derelict church metres from Croke Park

Eight units of the Dublin Fire Brigade are currently dealing with the blaze.

Updated 11.15pm

DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE are currently attending the scene of a substantial fire at a derelict church on Jones’ Road in Dublin.

The church is located less than 100 metres from Croke Park stadium. Gardaí said the road is currently closed and several buildings in the area have been evacuated as a precaution.

In total eight units of Dublin Fire Brigade have been sent to tackle the blaze. There has also been a request for the train line running over the street on which the church has been located to be closed.

Irish Rail told Twitter followers that although there had been disruptions earlier services are currently running as normal again. :

Totally agree. The amount of suspicious fires during the so called boom where beautiful buildings were burnt to the ground only to be replaced with new apartments or offices was staggering and shameful

About three years ago, some builders began demolition of this church, when locals noticed what was happening they brought the demolition to a halt through the proper channels. Now the building has been destroyed by fire. ?? I believe it’s a listed building

This is devastating news. My aunt fought to save this church, she stood in front of the diggers and stopped them demolishing it. A wonderful community spirit saved it. I hope there is not too much damage done :-(

I was just watching it being put out and it’s the house attached to the church. It’s completely gutted now. I hope no one was hurt. My neighbours were saying homeless people were staying in it.

Yep. Sure do. Just waiting to hear back from the Nigerian lottery. I won 96 million and 45 dollies. I gave them my details and they promised me the bank transfer by nov 30. I’m so lucky. Don’t even remember entering it. Strange as I’m not usually lucky. And yea they said dollies. I hope they meant $dollors.

Michelle speaking of churches why don’t do a story on the 450,000 christians who have fled Syria from the US and Israeli backed and supported rebels who are attacking christian churches and killing christian priests.

Stories like this will never be reported in the UK Ireland or the US. For fear of making the rebels out to be the bad guys cause we are all told how bad assad is!

I think the facade of the church is all that was left, the rest had been illegally demolished by a developer a number of years ago………

The church was demolished in 2008 as it was bought by investors, mainly a man from Erris, and they planned to build apartments on the site. I don’t know what happened those plans. But it was the double house attached to the back of the church that was on fire this evening as far as we could see.

Only the roof and first floor of building damaged. The main body of the church was saved by the fire fighters as were the houses at the rear of the church. Nobody was trapped inside. Gardai are investigating the cause of the fire.

Pity it didn’t spread to Croke Park and burn that monstrosity down. That blot on the landscape shoud never have been allowed. Big ugly concrete construction that looks like it was designed by the people who built the police stations in Belfast. A 1k property wasteland all around it.
Obviously the people responsible have no concept of aesthetic beauty or how a city works

Yes Sarah, 3 metre high steel gates and miles of razor wire. Security is very important when you have built something that doesn’t fit with the surrounding environment.

Of couse it’s empty for 90% of the year so those responsible don’t have to live with the thing

I am a resident on Jones’ Road and know that the developers were completely in their right to demolish the church. It is not a protected or listed building. It was a cock-up by the council. You can check the Judge’s ruling on the case. He told them it was fully legal what they did. In fact I believe they are now suing the council for millions due to their misconduct. “Mr Justice MacMenamin noted the building had no architectural, archaeological, environmental or scientific designation and was not identified as a protected structure in the city development plan 2005-2011. Before they bought it, the partners examined the legal status of the property and were satisfied there were no restrictions on its demolition, the judge said.” And Also “Mr Justice John MacMenamin said that partial demolition work on the former Methodist Church on Jones Road, Dublin, did not require planning permission”
