Joan Burton: We are still going to be heavily overseen by the Troika

The Minister for Social Protection has told TheJournal.ie it will not be “return to boom time instantly” when the EU/IMF programme ends later this month.

Updated 8pm

SOCIAL PROTECTION MINISTER Joan Burton has admitted that Ireland will still be heavily overseen by the Troika when the bailout programme officially ends in two weeks.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie at the Labour Party’s national conference in Killarney last night, Burton insisted that exiting the bailout “is very good news for people”, but does not mean “we’re back into boom time instantly or anything like that”.

She said we will “still be of course heavily overseen by the Troika in terms of the IMF making two visits next year” as well as the EU’s two-pack and six-pack agreements, which set stringent targets on EU nations’ deficit and spending.

Burton said that exiting the bailout meant that bond yields are coming down, the European Investment Bank is lending to Ireland for infrastructure projects and “slowly but surely Irish businesses are getting back on their feet”.

Patrick- there’s also an argument that the Irish electorate can’t be trusted. There’s a reason that catastrophic Fianna Fáil Government was in place. We do tend to reward political parties that tell us what we want to hear.

Rubbish. If they had told us the truth and said stuck to what they said they would do it would have worked for them. The bottom line was that they said what they said to maximise their vote and nothing else. They knew well what they had intended to do and it was to beggar ordinary folk while the elites escaped. In what other country are businesses that were run into the ground by developers, taken into a mickey mouse bank and the failed businessman paid €200k to run it? In what country would a wife of one of these tramps be given almost €100000/month to live on while someone aged 25 be given €400 for the same period?

How many regulations have been changed so that any banker that tries what Finger and Seanie did would be up in court before they could count their ill gotten gains?

Jim- you contradicted yourself in your own comment. “They said what they said to maximise their vote”. Yes. They did. Because that’s what the electorate here rewards. You should ask Alan Dukes how an electorate reacts when you give them bad news straight and don’t sugarcoat what lies ahead. He did that an FG nearly got wiped off the map.

Kerry- How many times have I heard that from you? Yet they remain the most popular party in the country. Unlike you, a lot of this country have noticed the vast improvement in the economy since this Government came to power and haven’t forgotten the mess they inherited. Genuinely, party politics aside I’m embarrassed for you that you so gormlessly buy the FF “sure they’re all the same” line. It’s an indictment of our education system.

Irish understanding to boom time – borrow a sh*tload of money, instantly forget that its borrowed at interest and proceed to spend like people that they clearly are not.

How to take over a country without firing a single bullet? Lend them the only currency they are allowed to use, at interest, then demand it all back at once plus the interest.

Whats this you say? Cant repay us? Ah its ok, how about I buy your nationas water supply for the interest you owe.
Next year you’ll owe more interest so I think I’ll have your national lottery.
Again the year after that you’ll need to give me your power grid ( as you know you have a vast renewable generation potential).
Actually, for this year, i’ll get your politicians to implement a home tax so I can brag to my banker friends this year. You know, they still cant believe I have taken ye Irish for so much. And all buy just printing money out of thin air and making ye use it.
