Cigarettes worth €20,000 seized in raids on Dublin houses

In a separate development, a Lithuanian national was detained with over 12,000 cigarettes and hit with a two week jail sentence.

ILLEGAL CIGARETTES WORTH €19,448 have been seized following raids on two houses in the Dublin area.

Officers from the Revenue’s Customs Service based at Dublin Port carried out the searches. If sold on the black market, the cigarettes could have deprived the exchequer of €16,525 in terms of lost taxes.

In a separate operation at Dublin Airport, over 12,000 ‘Red Compliment Slim’ and ‘Blue Compliment Slim’ cigarettes were seized from a Lithuanian national who arrived on a flight from Moscow via Copenhagen on Monday.

He was arrested, charged, and hit with a two-week jail term, backdated to 8 December.

    A loss of 16.525,00 ?
How much did the surveillance cost?
And how much do the 2 weeks jail term cost?
    And finally.
Will this put a smuggler off?
    Of course not.
Bottom line: waste of taxpayers money.
You may rethink this on Revenue❗️

Antonov. You may find that the Gardai and Customs acted on info received. And as for the cost re:trial and sentence it is the same for any Criminal.

    Mick Jordan…
Like for instance individuals who don’t pay their TV licence?
And these poor unfortunates get many months at tax payers expense.
You can hardly call them criminal.
Irish legislation makes no sense. In any department.

Antonov. Nobody spends more that a few hours in prison for non payment of TV licence so that blows that theory out of the water.
Someone who intentionally smuggles cigarettes for the purpose of selling them for profit is a Criminal, just the as if they were laundering Diesel.

i’d just got past ‘Cigarettes worth…’ and knew the usual culprits were involved.

” arrested, charged, and hit with a two-week jail term, backdated to 8 December”

then what? no deporting? wow, 2 weeks they’ll be at it again, laughing at the system.

They banned smoking for the only reason that some passangers felt “annoyed” well same with mobiles, no texts, games or calls, read the inflight magazine until you know by hearth the routes covered, the “amazing” places you can discover by using that particular airline, etc.

Jho, if we all leap to your “they are on welfare” conclusion and cut them off. Where will they get money. You clown.

What kind of a sentence is that? Food, a warm bed, exercise facilities and Satellite TV for 9 days, then back over to try a new method of smuggling the fags. Complete joke, I might give up the day job for this, might earn more.
