David Hall: Only bankers would benefit from my winning a seat in Europe

The mortgage arrears campaigner said he doesn’t think he could make any difference even if he won a seat in Europe.

MORTGAGE ARREARS CAMPAIGNER David Hall has sought to clarify that he has no intention of running as a candidate for any party in the European elections next year.

Hall has been approached by “junior level” representatives from the three main political parties for what he described as “informal conversations” recently.

However this morning he told Twitter followers he’s not going anywhere:

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Hall said a number of people from different parties had approached him to talk informally about his interest in politics.

Despite his concern for “all things political”, he said right now he needs to focus his attention on helping those in mortgage distress as many more stand to lose their homes in the next year.

I’m not going to be much help to people if I’m swanning around Dublin putting posters up and campaigning.

This decision comes despite his former membership of Fianna Fáil with Hall saying he left after the “bank guarantee debacle”.

Even if he were to run and win a seat in Europe, Hall thinks he would “make no difference there”.

He told this website that the CEO of one of the major banks asked if there was any limit on the number of election posters a candidate can put up. “They’d prefer to see me in Europe as well,” he joked.

“It’s not where I am at the moment and not where I need to be at,” he added. “The only people who would benefit from my departure would be a couple of bankers.”

Wow. Never ceases to amaze me how gullible people can be, taken in by the self created hype of this man. A former very active cumann member in Castleknock and supporter of the late Brian Lenihan. A man who lobbied hard for the gambling industry and used his good friend Mr Linehan to smooth the way for his business interests in gambling by pushing favourable legislation through the dail. A crusader for those in mortgage difficulties who is engaged in the gambling industry, which has caused countless people to lose their homes over the years and wreck families. A very dubious track record this man indeed has but then the irish media and obviously most people who only look at headlines and don’t take the time to dig deeper, see a version of this man which unfortunately is not accurate. Take the time one day to do a little digging.

Lending ten times your salary to buy a house was also a choice, i am sure you heard of due diligence, “Due diligence” is a term used for a number of concepts, involving either an investigation of a business or person prior to signing a contract, or an act with a certain standard of care, which is contrary to what some people would like to believe.

??? He is an advocate for debt forgiveness for people who over borrowed. Why should the rest of us be paying the mortgages of those who partied while the majority of us lived within our means ? Because of people like Hall repossessions aren’t taking place and the whole population is paying higher taxes to bail out failed mortgages , where’s the honour and integrity in that ?

People who over borrowed? More like people who borrowed witching their means before the goalposts were moved. I don’t know many people that can pay a mortgage with no job. Not to mention people that have been hit by savage cuts, all the while the bailed out banks keep increased their interest rates!

Would love to see 40 or 50 thousand home owners apply for bankruptcy and then we’ll see a different tune being played !

Banks got money to do deals with home owners ,and an awful lot of those home owners are struggling ,because of their taxes going to a zombie bank ..Now that’s what I call a hazard ..toxic at that!

He didn’t say the European Parliament is a joke…. they are your words Petr. The European Parliament actually works pretty well when you consider what it is trying to do across so many people, cultures, parties and geographies. Most of the decent legislation in this country comes from the Parliament – not from our own parliament.

Hall is referring to the fact that he would be a very very small fish in a very big pool over there. He is therefore right to attest that he would have more impact here than there – purely on a scale and impact basis.

We can but wish him luck – lots of people here are going to need him and his ilk advocating for them.

The European Parliament was rendered redundant during the bail out. Non elected bureaucrats have made all the decisions. Future legislation will now be based on economic criteria. Costly talking shop. Pity.

It’s up to us to maintain our competitive edge in Europe and it’s not the job of the European Parliament to represent Ireland’s best interests. It represents the best interest of Europe of which we are a part. We have to make our own case.
Today, We are IRELAND again!!!!!! Good riddance Troika but thanks all the same for helping to prevent us from slipping into the abyss.

The European parliament is one third of the legislative apparatus in Europe. The bailout and fiscal governance over and above seeing is own budget are beyond its powers.

Your comment is a little like dating the UK parliament was ineffective in Ireland’s bailout! Different mechanisms perform different functions in Europe.

Still think Hall (indeed most people) would be wasted there.

Michelle Hennessy – take the opportunity to make a name for yourself unlike the rest of the ‘esteemed’ i.e. lazy members of the media in Ireland and do some background checking on the beloved Mr Hall and write the article nobody has yet bothered to write about this guy. Take a look at his charity work and see how it aligns perfectly with his business interests. No such thing as a selfless act with this guy. It’s all for something in return. Take a very close look at how he departed the Make A Wish foundation! Some comments on here say this guy would be lost if he went into politics because she has a spine. There is nobody I can think of more suited to politics than this guy. He is arrogant, selfish, aggressive with people, economical with the truth, conniving and driven by making money. Sound like any politician you know. He has been a very active member of FF for years and years and only disassociated from them when their image became such that they would be no use to him to pursue his political ambitions. Make no is take about it, deposited what he says publicly, this guy has always and will always be looking to become a political figure. If FF hadn’t imploded he would have expected to have been in office with them by now. Staggering how the foolish and ill-informed irish public have been duped by this conman.
