Weather warning downgraded - but 110km/h winds expected

Wrap up warm, because temperatures will be low today.

MET ÉIREANN HAS downgraded its national weather warnings to status yellow this morning – but that doesn’t mean that we can expect things to die down.

There is still a wind warning in place for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Munster, Leinster, Cavan and Monaghan.

Met Éireann warns that people should expect southwest winds of 45 to 55km/h, with gusts of up to 110 km/h occasionally.

It will be cold and blustery today, and we can expect frequent showers across the west, with a long spell of rain in the south of the country at around midday. Tonight, there will be more showers, and some ground frost inland.

Wrap up warm today and tonight – highest temperatures are expected to reach only 7 degrees.

AA Roadwatch has said that there have been reports of heavy snow around Mountmellick, which is causing delays.

The M7 Dublin/Limerick Road is extremely slippery between junctions 23 and 22 due to heavy snow, and there are slippery conditions on the N17 between Collooney and Knock.

In Cork, there are “very slippery conditions” on the N71 Kenmare/Clonakilty Rd, AA Roadwatch said.

Gardaí said that they were busy yesterday evening but things calmed down overnight. While there have been a number of crashes, no major road incidents have been reported.

Yesterday, Cork’s Kent Railway Station was struck by wind that cause a roof to collapse.

The station has now partially reopened, and Irish Rail said that full services will operate this morning.

It said that services to and from Heuston, Cobh and Midleton are operating but may be subject to minor delays.

There will be no car parking available in the main station car park due to the closure of the Lower Glanmire Road, but parking will be availabe in the car park off Railway Street.

Services will operate from platforms three, four and five only, and platforms one and two will remain closed until further notice.
