The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: a former AIB director receives €3m in pay, Sean Quinn breaks his silence, and a smackdown for a moonwalking Romanian politician…

Every day, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know with your morning coffee.

1. #AIB: AIB’s former managing director Colm Doherty received over €3m in pay last year – despite his bank needing to be taken into state ownership in November as a result of its capital crisis. The Irish Times reports that Doherty received a €432,000 salary, as well as extra payments he was contractually entitled to.

2. #QUINN: Seán Quinn has broken his silence and released his first statement since his Quinn Group was taken into receivership by state-owned Anglo Irish Bank. In it, he blames bad financial advice for his €3bn losses speculating in Anglo shares – and claims he would have been able to trade his way out of his debts.

3. #BAIL: 40 people committed murders in the last five years while released on bail for other offences, figures obtained by the Irish Daily Mail show. Victims support groups have described the figures as “shocking”.

4. #GARDAÍ: The Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation says it’s “stretched to the limit” in trying to counter white-collar crime – while the association representing sergeants and superintendents says the financial hardship of some officers means they’re now struggling to pay the bills.

5. #DART BOMB: A full investigation is underway into how a suspicious device was left on the tracks in Dún Laoghaire. It emerged last night that the device was viable, and did contain explosives, the Irish Times reports.

6. #NATASHA: The father of the UCD student who was viciously assaulted in Chicago last year has told the Irish Mirror he wishes he hadn’t brought his daughter back to Ireland. Natasha McShane was attacked a year ago this year – but her condition has regressed since coming home and is now less mobile than she was when she left the United States.

7. #IMMIGRATION: A major diplomatic row is brewing between Italy, France and Germany over the increased flow of Tunisian immigrants into the latter two countries. Italy has issued the immigrants with temporary residency permits that allows them to travel within the continental EU member states, but France wants to kick them out unless they can prove they have the means to sustain themselves.

8. #TABLET WARS: Apple has filed legal action against Samsung, claiming that the designs of the latter’s Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers are intentional copies of the designs of the iPad and iPhone.

9. #MOONWALKER: A Romanian politician has been asked to act more professionally after a video of him performing a Michael Jackson-style moonwalk became a viral internet hit. Edmond Talmacean saw his profile sky-rocket after his appearance – but prime minister Emil Boc said the routine was not suited to politics.

Celebratory behavior like this is part and parcel of the lives of us ordinary and real Irish people, something I would not expect you to know anything about, of course
You have learned well at the foot of your master, Vlad, who used similar tactics in the Dail with Mary Lou, to take the spotlight off the banks not having to pay tax for the next 20 years, but we are not fooled.
