Driver rescued from Achill lake after car plunges in during treacherous conditions

The rescue was complicated by gale force winds, sleet and snow showers as water rapidly filled the car.

A DRIVER WAS rescued from an Achill lake after the car she was driving was submerged at a notorious danger spot.

The Achill Coast Guard was called to the scene at Keel Lake on Sunday afternoon within minutes of the accident to find the woman’s car completely in the water.

The rescue was complicated by gale forces winds, sleet and snow showers, which combined to create treacherous conditions: the water was cold and fast-flowing, rapidly filling the car with water.

The car was also perched on a steep underwater ledge, creating the further risk that the car would roll off and trap the woman underwater.

Two members of the crew entered the water and managed to remove the woman from the car.  The woman was brought onto dry land and given first aid before being taken to a local GP for treatment.

The Achill Coast Guard praised the work of the crew involved in the rescue, saying that they prevented a “life threatening situation [from] ending in a real tragedy”.

The rescuers will always remember saving that life. And the rescued will as well.

Careful in coming days. That intense low pressure area approaching Ireland is forecast to have a central pressure as low as the lowest ever recorded in Ireland. It will be here early Christmas eve morning. Here is the synoptic data map from UK Met Office:
    http://www.weathercharts.org/ukmomslp.htm#t84

look at the T+48 map, which should show conditions on xmas eve.

Sorry, that’s now on the T+24 chart. 931mb low! That’s lower than the lowest pressure ever recorded in Ireland since records began. (932mb at Limerick in 1832, I think it was).

A heartening news item at any time of the year to hear of a life saved, but at Christmastide it’s very special. Greetings from England, let’s hope weather conditions improve soon!
