Device left in porch of south Dublin house had potential to kill

A number of houses in the area were evacuated today as the Defence Forces carried out a controlled explosion.

AN ARMY BOMB disposal team rendered safe a viable improvised device in the Bawnlee area of Tallaght, south Dublin, this afternoon.

The Defence Forces said a team was deployed in response to a request from gardaí after a suspect device was placed inside the porch of a private residence.

The team arrived on scene at 3.45pm and examined the device in situ. A cordon was put in place and gardaí evacuated some nearby houses for public safety. The team leader opted to remove the suspect device to a nearby green area where it was subsequently rendered safe by means of a controlled explosion.

On further examination, the device was declared a viable IED which the Defence Forces said means it “had all the component parts to initiate and cause serious injury or loss of life”. The scene was declared safe at 4.30pm and the team have now returned to base.

The remains of the device will now be handed over to gardaí to assist them with their investigation.

This is the 250th call out of 2013 and the 81st viable device dealt with by the Defence Forces this year. Teams will remain on standby throughout the Christmas period.

@the voice. Unsung heroes would be more accurate. How can they be forgotten when they are sadly so often in the news.

That’s why it is called a controlled explosion, they don’t actually detonate the device but use a shaped charge to disable it.

Why is there no rush of mass hysteria to the news of devices left south of the Border as there is when in the north?

any decent supermarket should have most of the ingredients for a bit of hysteria but its just getting so busy what with last minute booze rushes, panic nappy buying and Sellotape shortages. Can we do the mass hysteria after Xmas?

Don’t think this is anything to do with terrorists, the north or any of that bull Martin ,more likely an intimidation tactic by some no mark dealer or wanna be gang member trying to impress some other idiot but in doing so putting people’s kids out in the cold 2 days before Xmas and risking kids lives with stupid pipe bombs ,be proper men and have a punch up if you have a grievance with someone and stop using the cowards way of terrorists and planting indiscriminate bombs , PLANKS !

Ofc i think its disgusting and these people are evil who make and plant any type of bomb that hurts kids or can hurt anyone innocent. I am just saying stop blaming it on people and bringing the old it was the IRA or RIRA. These people are nothing to do with the Irish fight and dont represent the IRA. So stop labelling them, Just one label for thugs who plant bombs and shoot people over drug debts and drug fights. And any member of IRA or RIRA who affiliate themselves or sell or help or sell protection to these lot are not anything to do with Irish people Irish freedom or the hero’s who fought for Irish people. They long stepped away from those ideologies(and are hated by good decent Ex Ira members when they start protecting those who kill our children.

Nothing decent about them hence called dissidents as the broke away for path of violence and blood. They are involved in much of the serious stuff down here. They care less about you, your kids or politics they wish to work of their own warped views. That includes drugs diesel and cheap cigarettes. Called fund raising.

Yeah agreed. I would imagine the army have the best stuff for this job but the pay for putting your life on the line doing that is shocking. Likewise for guards as they would probably be called first to examine it and call out army.

As a European country we must have highest bomb rates by far. That you to the rira

Sean I think your wrong the dealers are always feuding with the RIRA so how are they part of it! They refuse to pay the dissidents any protection anymore cause they know the IRA aren’t as strong as them nowadays, anyone with a good wifi connection could learn how to assemble a bomb

There is a degree of skill involved in making them. Can make termite bombs too from the anarchists cookbook but noone uses them the simplest to make. No they use pipe bombs.

Your right they do hate them hence the Alan Ryan hit. Some media do report on it. But at the same time they do make money from taxing and in return give them pipe bombs. Paul Williams often reports on it
