Flood warnings as high tides expected in Cork and Dublin

Sand bags are being put in place at locations prone to flooding.

CORK AND DUBLIN Councils have warned people about the risk of flooding over the coming days.

Dublin City Council said that a series of very high tides are due to occur over the next couple of days, in particular tomorrow (Wednesday 1 January) at 11am and Friday (3 January) at 12.33pm.

It said that as a precaution, the City Council has closed the flood gates on the Dodder and the Tolka Rivers, while the Liffey Boardwalk will also be closed to the public until Friday of this week.

Sand bags are being installed at strategic locations in Clontarf (near Alfie Byrne Road) as part of the flood defences and at Sandymount for the same duration.

In addition, public carparks in Sandymount and Clontarf will be closed during this period. The council said it apologises for any inconvenience this, or any other precautionary works, may cause.

Property owners whose buildings are at risk of tidal flooding – particularly in the Clontarf and Sandymount areas – are advised to protect their properties. They can find some tips on flood protection measures at this website.

Meanwhile, Cork City Council has issued a tidal flood alert, saying that high tides are expected over the next few days, up until Sunday.

It said that a tidal surge and strong south to south easterly winds are predicted over the next number of days, and that there is a danger of tidal flooding in the city.

Due to this, low-lying areas of the city might find themselves flooded. A full list of these areas can be found on the council’s website.

Householders and businesses are being warned to take precautionary measures to protect their property during this time.
