Two Swiss tourists murdered in Egypt

The couple were reported missing a week ago and have now been found dead in a villa.

TWO SWISS TOURISTS have been found murdered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada, Switzerland’s ATS news agency reported today.

No immediate details of the crime were available from Swiss authorities, but ATS cited the foreign ministry confirming the deaths of two Swiss citizens in Egypt.

Quoting Egyptian media, ATS said that the Swiss couple had been reported missing a week ago, and had been found dead in a villa, with the building’s guard allegedly the prime suspect in the killing.

This photograph shows investiagtions at the villa:

@ Chopper, its got nothing to do with innocent eyes, I’ve seen far worse in real life, I’ve seen my best friends body mangled on the road, to give just one example. As you so callously talk about the humanity of it, do you not realise anybody, including friends and family of the victims, could see this, where is the humanity there. This is just sensationalist journalism at it’s worst. Obviously you didn’t see the picture of the body being dragged out of the hole, which was removed earlier. Try showing a bit of respect for the victims.

It’s not a war zone. Not where I’m going. I’m going to sharm el sheikh. From Cairo, it’s an equivalent distance as Dublin to Brussels. Also known as the city of peace. 25,000 Europeans arrived there in the last two days. It’s a fully secure resort and I’m sure our holiday will be amazing. I’m just concerned as any humane person would be. And, having been attacked on a Dublin street and considering there is a young guy dead from walking home in Tallaght, dublin isn’t exactly a safe haven either.

The climb up Mt Sinai is amazing. Not easy as you normally trek through the night & arrive at the top to watch the sunrise & it’s bloody freezing up there. Use common sense & you’ll be grand.

Dahab is also worth checking out. It’s the hippy stoner resort of the Sinai.

Our flight is direct from dublin and was full to capacity weeks ago. Majority irish I’m assuming, As are all the other flights from Dublin to sharm, As I said 25,000 European tourists arrived there recently. I know sharm isn’t real Egypt. I’ve done the real Egypt. Just want some sun and relaxing. This thread is worrying me tho. But I can’t find anything in the news about sharm in recent weeks and there’s 100s of reviews on trip adviser from December from people who had a great time. And if the irish government states it’s ok to go with caution then that’s fine by me.

Have been in and out of Egypt since the mid-1950s and lived there for eight years in all.
Haven’t been in several years but many good friends of mine have gone in recent months,
and some who have lived there for decades are still there. Yet even old timers in Cairo are more careful than they were before: they are cautious, avoid demonstrations, careful about taking photos, don’t dress as if in Miami in respect of local customs. I’ve advised most people who fear travelling to Egypt they probably shouldn’t go: even if safe they will be too leery and suspicious to enjoy the trip. One also is only more vulnerable if one shows fear or distrust. Always good to learn few phrases of Arabic which brings you a bit into the fold and not simply an outsider.

I don’t know St. Catherine Monastery is a good destination now as most of the recent incidents have been in the Sinai, including Egyptian army/police being harassed and even worse.

If you do go, you should be aware the country is in turmoil and you may need to curtail some activities you might normally like to do and therefor decide not to go now, yet Egypt is not a war zone. I’d love to go back but then I know my experience in the country with Egyptians and knowing Arabic reasonably well give me confidence and an advantage. What is likely to be a problem now are the inconveniences of the country not operating very well and less efficiently than even before, huge traffic jams, people impatience (unusual for Egyptians), taking lots of time to get simple things done, etc.

Very little is functioning quite as it should yet the pyramids haven’t moved, the Nile still flows, museums still open. However, freely strolling about all parts of Cairo, Alexandria, etc. as one used to is not so advisable. A lot depends what kind of trip you plan or want to make.

@Eric: “Will never go on holiday to a Muslim country…….yes I know there are Catholics there too” Ha?

If you deem a Muslim country as those with greater than or equal to 50% of the population practicing Islam that does include a few ‘hot zones’ However if you list countries with 50% or greater of the population listed as practicing Catholics you find a few doozies there too. I wouldn’t be donning the speedos and traipsing about the Vatican for example.

In fact if you look at the countries with the highest homicide rates and compare to our two previous lists you will see that Catholics are far more fond of murdering each other.

Now war zones; well missing a holiday there is just common sense isn’t it?

Stay at home altogether Eric, you’re better off.
