US pledges help to Iraqi forces in Al-Qaeda battle but insists "it is their fight"

Iraq lost control of Fallujah to Al-Qaeda-linked fighters, a city where US forces repeatedly battled insurgents.

US SECRETARY OF State John Kerry has said the United States would stick by Iraq in its battle with Al-Qaeda-linked militants, but stressed it was “their fight.”

“We will stand with the government of Iraq who push back against (militant) efforts … but it is their fight — that is something we determined some time ago,” he told reporters in Jerusalem.

Iraq lost Fallujah to Al-Qaeda-linked fighters, a senior security official said Saturday, putting militants back in control of the city west of Baghdad where US forces repeatedly battled insurgents.

Fighting in Anbar province killed 65 people — eight soldiers, two government-allied tribesmen and 55 militants from the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), security officials said.

It is the worst violence to hit the province in years, and the first time militants have exercised such open control in major cities since the height of the bloody insurgency that followed the US-led invasion of 2003.

“We are very, very concerned” about ISIL, Kerry said.

“These are the most dangerous players in the region. Their barbarism is on display for all to see, their brutality is something have seen before.

“The United States will continue to be in close contact … We will help them in their fight, but this is a fight in the end they will have to win and I’m confident they can.”

@Irish Sceptic: Not really. The United states of america that broke away from the British Empire in 1776 was only a small portion of what exists today. The Spanish owned Florida until 1821, The French owned most of the Mid West, and continued to until 1803. Mexico held Texas & New mexico and until 1845. Everything from Mexico to the California coast until 1848. Russia held Alaska until 1867 until the USA purchased it.
It was only from the 1840s on that the USA begun claiming random islands around the globe as its territory, in imperial manner. Within 100 years most of the places claimed had received independence from the USA.

Irish sceptic, I doubt ifbthey are bigger than the Chinese Empire or the Russian one or even perhaps the Macedonian Empire of Alexander, the Roman Empire at its zenith or the shirt-lived Japanese Empire if the early 1940s whose Emperor survived the and together with his successors rule the only extant Empire of the 21st century.
