Local authorities will outline priorities for storm repair funding

The response to the storms will first be assessed by local authorities before a preliminary report is then brought to Government next week.

FUNDING FOR REPAIRS to transport and coastal facilities following recent storms will be considered by Government departments in light of priorities outlined by local authorities.

The response to the storms will be considered by local authorities before a preliminary report is then brought to Government next week.

The process was outlined today by the National Coordination Group (NCG) which today met in response to the recent severe weather and assessed the impact of the storms on infrastructure and communities.

The group said that the Department of Social Protection (DSP) has so far assisted a small number of households that were affected by the storms and flooding.

The DSP advised that any person experiencing hardship as a result of storm damage is advised to contact their local DSP office which administers urgent needs payments under various exceptional needs schemes.

The meeting of the NCG was attended by the Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Brian Hayes as well as representatives from Government departments, response agencies and local authorities.

The group noted that the new Met Éireann colour-coded weather warnings were of assistance to the public as well as varous agencies “in understanding the threats posed by the weather situations”.

“Safety messages had been responded to well by the public but, regrettably, one fatality was attributed to a severe storm,” said the NCG.

JOKE…….Why do you always see 2 or 3 council workers standing around a hole in the ground doing nothing…….cos 19 or 20 would be ‘too’obvious!

My Grandfather God rest him had a great one liner for when he passed a group of those workers around a hole. He used wind the car window down and say ( really straight faced), ” Did you find it yet lads? “. ” What?”, they would ask. ” The Treasure!”, he used say. Lol

I see last week, the river overflowed – in the harbour area in Wicklow Town……..this – despite ‘elaborate’ remedial works a couple of years ago! Ironically, any County Council Official (God knows there’s a few around) with a bit of knowledge regards tidal/recent years freaky weather, should have copped this – owing that even to the untrained eye…….the new wall didn’t look high enough!

Just another example of Public Service inefficiency. Do it half arse’d – so it will have to be done again & again……..

    Could be worse.
    England floods a worse.

Between a slightly faster rail line to the north & putting in new nuke missiles in their submarines, the Tories have commuted to w*nking away over £50 billion!

Imagine what flood protection they could do with that.

Any word on how soon repairs of the worst damage can start or do they really need to get through the red tape before they say yeah those roads need fixing.
