St Vincent's Hospital Photocall Ireland

St Vincent's bosses meet with HSE over pay - but won't say what happened

The hospital group was hauled before the HSE to discuss its compliance with public sector pay rules.

THE HEADS OF St Vincent’s Hospital met with the Director General of the HSE today to discuss problems at the hospital with executive pay – but have not given any details on what was discussed.

In a brief statement this evening, the hospital confirmed Professor Noel Whelan, the chair of St Vincent’s Healthcare Group, and deputy chair Stewart Harrington met with Tony O’Brien and other senior executives in the HSE over the hospital’s compliance with public sector pay.

Hours before Christmas Day, the hospital released details of how much it was paying its executives, which showed CEO Nicholas Jermyn is being paid an additional €136,591 on top of his HSE salary of €136,282. Jermyn also received a privately-funded allowance of almost €20,000 for a car.

Five other staff members were also found to be receiving extra money on top of their salaries paid by the HSE.

St Vincent’s Healthcare Group says all of the additional money being paid to staff comes from private sources, as the hospital runs both public and private services. It stressed that none of the money came from charitable donations.

However questions remain about the salaries. St Vincent’s had initially refused to disclose how much senior staff were paid when questions arose about whether or not it was complying with the rules around public sector pay.

The hospital group said the outcome of today’s meeting will go back to other senior staff at St Vincent’s before before brought before the HSE again.

“Issues arising from that meeting will be brought to the board of St Vincent’s Healthcare Group at a very early date and shortly thereafter there will be further discussions with the HSE,” the statement said.

The hospital once again refused to put forward a spokesperson to answer questions from the media, as it has repeatedly done since the issue arose.

Outrageous behaviour from SVUH.. When he’s boasting about something you can’t get Nicky Jermyn off the airwaves. Suddenly he’s gone all shy.

We need a brand new political party made up of ordinary tax payers to right this cess pool of a country.

We need low tax, small government and an end to the arrogant largesse that is omnipresent at the upper echelons of the public service.

If no party like this emerges by the summer of 2015 I’ll form one myself.

This incessant suckling at the state’s tit by gombeen men has to stop while we still have a country to salvage

No point doing it any sooner. No GE till 2016. There may be no point doing it at all. Would enough people vote any differently? Possibly not. Maybe we need to wait for all the high tax payers to emigrate. Let the IMF back in and do the job they should have done.

Any person in Ireland with a salary over €200,000 PA should pay Income Tax of 80per cent on the excess!

    That will solve the problem!

Not enough of them unfortunately. Would raise very little in the grand scheme of things. However u could be on to something. How about 80% on anything in excess of €5,000 a year? Seems fair enough

When will all others who got tops ups answer questions also. Why are hse tolerating this behaviour as we are all paying for those who cannot achieve a budget nearly 10 times the average industrial wage (using a Sinn Fein quote)

Transparency is the hallmark of the HSE and ‘sophisticated corporate governance’ is the tag line of St Vincent’s. No mental reservations on either side.
