SIPTU members at Aer Lingus and DAA to vote on strike action

The decision comes a month after SIPTU said that Aer Lingus had threatened them with legal action legal action if they went ahead with a ballot.

SITPU MEMBERS AT Aer Lingus and the Dublin Airport Authority are to be balloted on potential industrial action over a pensions dispute.

The upcoming vote follows a meeting of staff yesterday evening at which the union members also called on the trustees of the pension scheme to resign.

They claim that employers have failed to engage in meaningful discussions on the deficit in the Irish Airlines Superannuation Scheme (IASS).

The SIPTU members have also decided to ballot to withhold both the employer and employee contributions to the scheme.

The decision comes a month after SIPTU said that Aer Lingus had threatened them with legal action if they went ahead with a ballot.

“There is extreme anger now among the employees of Aer Lingus, DAA and the Shannon Airport Authority,” said SIPTU organiser, Dermot O’Loughlin.

After three years of an industrial relations process the pensions crisis, if anything, has worsened at a time when financial market conditions are improving. The membership has said that it can neither afford, nor tolerate, hard earned money going into a scheme from which they may never see any value in the future.

The ballot on industrial action will be inclusive of strike action with SIPTU calling on Aer Lingus, DAA and the Shannon Airport Authority to make discussions on the IASS a priority.

“Failure to do so will unfortunately lead to very significant industrial episodes at Ireland’s international airports,” said O’Loughlin.

Having a lay majority on a committee to appoint judges is just ridiculous. Would you have a randomly selected lay majority panel to appoint and interview a chief of medicine ?
As for the argument of judges been political can somebody point out where a judges political interest has swayed a case ?

This is a Shane Ross SF vanity project.

Well the present system is not working needs reform….Regularly on the Journal there are reports of cases where the judge gives a laughable sentence…Also there seems to be no consistency between judges in similiar cases….Also it is impossible to fire or even reprimand a Judge at present….

Its also a pointless bill as the committee can nominate a judge but the government can refuse the nomination and still appoint whoever they like.
To change this a referendum is needed.

Would be far better off putting in place minimum sentencing terms and making sure judges stick to them. Mandatory 15 year sentences for those with massive amounts if convictions would be a start.

This Judicial Appointments Commission Bill needs to be scrapped in its entirety. It’s fundamentally flawed from its conception, no amount of amendments will make it worthy.

If this dog’s dinner of a bill manages to ingest itself into the statute books this year, but then Fianna Fail replaces the current government after the general election, Fianna Fail must repeal Ross’ judicial appointments legislation.
