This woman had to give up her job, swimming and going to the salon...because of smoking

Paula Newman and two other smokers with lung cancer, heart problems and COPD urge kids to not smoke in three short video messages.

PAULA NEWMAN WAS one of three smokers who spoke out against their past habit at a news conference today.

Newman, 50, was diagnosed with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) five years ago and since then has seen a dramatic decline in her quality of life. Speaking about her diagnosis this afternoon, she explained that she can no longer work as a chef, go swimming or dancing or enjoy getting her hair done in a salon…all because of her decision to smoke.

The three smokers were brought together today by a number of health organisations who joined forces to call on the government to introduce plain packaging on tobacco problems as soon as possible.

The charities – including the ISPCC, the Irish Cancer Society, the Irish Asthma Society and the Irish Heart Foundation – believe replacing attractive branding with graphic warnings will discourage children from picking up the habit, thus improving health outcomes in years to come.

To emphasise their arguments, Newman, Charlotte Heaphey and Frank Cox told their stories of COPD, heart problems and lung cancer.

Paula Newman, 50

I can’t dance anymore….

The Dublin woman cannot go for a swim, get her hair done in a salon or work as a chef (her profession) because of her COPD.

Charlotte Heaphey, 47

I was 11 years old when I started smoking…For 36 years I inhaled life-threatening chemicals…

Heaphey is a mother of two. She suffered a heart attack four years ago.

Here’s her story, in her own words:

Frank Cox, late 60s

I’m one of the lucky ones…if I had still been smoking, I would have had no chance.

A lung cancer survivor, Cox can’t believe that a “product that kills” has been left on the market.

Poll: Do you think plain cigarette packaging will deter smokers?

Plain cigarette packaging should be introduced ‘as soon as possible’

That’s a bit of a no-brainier. People have set budgets and if they send their money on-line then of course shop sales will drop. I do a lot of window-shopping and see items I want to buy and then go home and order them on-line at a cheaper price..

There’s room for both high street shops and online retail.
Most people will want to try on a suit before buying it. It’s just most people don’t want to get completely gouged just because it’s being sold on Grafton St.

Got cashback over £70 sterling from flubit for all presents bought online last month. It’s a no brainer when you have the likes of Debenhams selling drones for €110 instore when you can buy them online in the UK for £25. People aren’t stupid.

Lets be real, even without the sterling collapse it’s better value to buy online from the UK than Irish stores. Irish business need to shape up, they’re part of a global marketplace now where people will gravitate towards the best offer.

Well in all fairness shops have been robbing us for years. So if you can find what you want on the web then good luck to you. After all the amount you can save means more money in your pocket. There’s a massive gap in shop prices and web prices for the same product so why would you pay more.
