How could you not adopt one of these dogs?

Warning: Candidates in today’s Galway adoption day making puppy dog eyes at you.

A SLOWDOWN IN rehoming needy dogs and an increase in neglected and abandoned ones has inspired one rescue centre to stage an ‘adoption day’.

The MADRA facility in Connemara is putting on a special afternoon targeting would-be pet adopters in Galway city today. The event runs from midday to 4pm at the Trusty Pet Pals dog day care centre at Briarhill Industrial Park.

The idea is for people who think they might like to give a home to one of the MADRA dogs to come and talk to the rescue team and to meet some of the dogs and pups looking for a new family.

The chairperson of MADRA, Edel Comerford, said that it is helpful if people have an “open mind” about the breed of dog they might like. She said:

We always have people coming to us with a specific breed of dog in mind, but often times this type of dog will not be suitable for their lifestyle.

The rescue centre brought in 832 dogs and pups last year, with many coming from local authority pounds.

If you think you might be interested and have specific questions ahead of this afternoon’s event, it’s worth emailing madradogrescue@gmail.com or texting 086 8149026.

These are some of the cheeky chappies available to meet today:

  • Nicky the whippet

"A gorgeous little whippet boy of around a year old. He is currently out on foster care, but would love a forever home. His foster carer says he is very quiet and well-mannered in the house, house-trained, neutered and loves to play with soft toys. He learns quickly and has great agility."
  • Julian the golden labrador

"Julian is a golden labrador boy of about two years old. He is a strong boy and full of cuddles and tail wags and would suit an active family."
  • Rex the labrador

"Rex is an energetic three year old. He loves to chase around after the ball and would suit a family with older kids who could play ball with him."Source: Gillian Hunter/MADRA

I can honestly say, from personal experience, that rescuing a pet can be one of the best experiences of your life. For a small donation you will receive years of undying love, loyalty and affection.

If her in doors would let me have a second pet i would gladly take one. These people do fantastic work considering the horrific state some of the animals are brought to them in.

Dogs aid do amazing work, we adopted our dog from there a couple of weeks ago. They receive no funding at all from the government and rely on donations and volunteers. They’re based in Meakstown (at the back of Ikea) and as far as I know they’re full to capacity so desperately need to find the animals homes

Big, you could contact the DSPCA or try Dogs Trust Ireland, all dogs are neutered/spayed and micro chipped. Be prepared for rigorous checks, they are careful about who they let adopt as they want to be sure the dog will suit the owners and the owners suit the dog. Plus they want to reduce the chances of getting the dog back at a later date. Good luck, if you do it you will be well rewarded for the next 10 – 15 years with a love and devotion most humans are incapable of giving.

Reg is the double of our black lab… He would have good fun with her! A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than they love themselves. They give back love in spades.

Dogs aid do sterling work on a tiny budget and staffed only by volunteers. All dogs are neutered vaccinated and microchipped. 018347134. I’ve 3 rescue dogs and money couldn’t buy them ! If you can’t adopt a dog consider donating a toy or a treat for the little ones !

I hope they all find the capable, loving homes they deserve.

I just wish someone had cleaned the eye booger off of little Julian up there.
