'Stay away from the coast': Warnings issued as storm expected to hit hardest today

Winds of up to 130km/h are set to combine with high seas, leading to an increased risk of flooding, especially along coasts.

WITH THE WORST of this weekend’s stormy conditions set to hit today, the Irish Coast Guard has issued a warning to members of the public to stay away from exposed coastal areas.

An ‘orange alert’ wind warning issued yesterday by Met Éireann remains in place for the West, North-west and Co Kerry.

The strong winds are set to combine with high seas, leading to an increased risk of flooding, especially along coasts — with the risk at its highest this afternoon and tonight.

People are being urged not to go out on exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches, promenades or any other coastal areas during the storm.

“Huge waves can be whipped up by high seas. These waves can pose hazards to anyone close to the shoreline,” Coast Guard manager Declan Geoghegan said.

“The public should be extremely careful when venturing out in such conditions — they should check the weather forecast and remain away from exposed areas.”

Winds of up to 130km are forecast for today in counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Kerry and Limerick. Meanwhile, a ‘yellow alert’ wind warning is in place for all of Leinster, as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford.

Anyone planning on travelling today is being advised to take heed of local forecasts, and to check out the Road Safety Authority’s advice on driving in stormy conditions.

In addition, the Coast Guard is warning that owners of small vessels and fishing vessels should seek shelter and secure them properly with moorings.

High tide for Galway this afternoon is at 12.42pm — tide times for the rest of the affected area can be checked here.

If you do see someone in difficulty at the sea, or lakes or rivers contact the Coast Guard on 999 or 112.

Hopefully people pay attention to this. I saw news footage a couple of weeks back of a woman dragging her two children along by the hand in Lahinch while the waves crashed over what was left of the sea wall, crazy carry on.

I wonder how much energy could be harnessed from the last month or so..if we had any foresight or gumption maybe we would be sitting pretty..no..we put school teachers and county councillors in charge of the country..sure arent we lucky to have a roof over our heads..now..off with you

The problem is that we can’t store renewable energy so what’s the point of more wind farms? We are already at our limits with renewables because of the back up that’s required when the wind stops blowing. We just can’t store power from gusting winds.

    Barry,
Wave energy production is the same as wind energy production.
No wind, no waves, no energy.

No countries are trying to harness wave energy as it is less consistent and harder to transfer to electric than wind.

Tidal energy is a different kettle of fish, but requires distinct and specific locations.

So, no, the storms over the past few weeks couldn’t be harnessed any more than they have been with current wind farms.

My sky signal is beginning to get a bit scrambled. It’s slightly annoying. Suffering sky customers are the forgotten victims of these storms.

The problem is that newspapers & tv ask people to send on pics of storm which puts some people at risk by standing in dangerous places and being reckless with theirs and others lives. The trouble with pepole wanting their 15 minutes of fame.

The black bit in the graphic is actually a bit further north and is an area of low pressure ,currently 949 hPa while our reading is 987hPa, hence the strong winds which is cold air being dragged in from Greenland and warmer air from the ocean, should be an interesting week. I bet all the local authorities used the time between the last gales to clear drains and unblock rivers and streams…..

Why does the writer say “…the West, South-West and Co. Kerry.”? Surely Co. Kerry is IN both the West and South-West? Maybe the writer has a little bias…?
