More than 100 complaints about Panti appearance and RTÉ apology

The vast majority were from people complaining about the broadcaster’s apology to a number of newspaper columnists and the Iona Institute.

THE BROADCASTING AUTHORITY of Ireland has received more than 100 complaints about the appearance of Rory O’Neill, aka Panti, on the Saturday Night Show and the subsequent apology by RTÉ.

The BAI confirmed that the “majority” of the complaints are “related to RTÉ’s decision to issue an apology” to a number of people who were mentioned in the initial interview of 11 January.

Others related to reports of compensation paid by the broadcaster.

“The BAI is in the process of acknowledging receipt of these complaints,” a spokesperson told TheJournal.ie.

“The normal complaint process applies where an individual is required to address their complaint to the broadcaster first and, in the event that they are not satisfied with the response received, they can then refer the matter to the BAI.”

On the issue of compensation, she noted that the BAI only considers complaints relating to broadcast content.

Any corporate decision of the broadcaster would not be considered under the broadcasting complaints process.

Following queries by TheJournal.ie, RTÉ said it would not comment on a claim by the Iona Institute that damages are to be paid to individuals as a result of the initial comments.

The presenter of the Saturday Night Show, Brendan O’Connor apologised for any “upset or distress” caused to journalist and broadcaster John Waters, Breda O’Brien and some members of the Iona institute, by comments made by a guest suggesting that they “are homophobic”.

He referred to an interview with O’Neill who spoke about homophobia in Ireland.

During the 25 January show, O’Connor said:

Now, on the Saturday night show two weeks ago comments were made by a guest suggesting the journalist and broadcaster John Waters, Breda O’Brien and some members of the Iona Institute are homophobic. These are not the views of RTÉ and we would like to apologise for any upset or distress caused to the individuals named or identified. It is an important part of democratic debate that people must be able to hold dissenting views on controversial issues.

The episode of the Saturday Night Show that featured the interview with O’Neill was removed from the RTÉ Player for a period of time. When it was replaced, part of O’Neill’s interview had been cut short, with legal concerns cited as the reason.

Protest

Meanwhile, LGBT Noise has said that it will hold a protest at 2pm on Sunday 2 February on South King Street, outside the Gaiety Theatre, on this issue.

The organisation said that the event will be for the LGBT community and supporters to respond to the recent controversy over comments made by LGBT rights advocate O’Neill on the Saturday Night Show.

LGBT Noise said it objects “to post-censoring of Rory O’Neill’s comments, the subsequent apology made by RTE to individuals and the Iona Institute, and the use of TV licence-fees to pay compensation”.

I despise censorship of any kind Jesco. but, if RTE handed over money they did so on legal advice.

RTE have form in defamation and perhaps the Fr Kevin Reynolds case was/is still fresh in the memory.

As a gay parent Jesco, I’ve never felt offended by Iona. Not once. I wrote them off as religious nuts years ago so they don’t bother me in the slightest.

I do find it amusing that everyone else takes them so seriously though. All they have is a point of view.

Sorry Sam but they don’t. ANY form of homophobia is wrong!! If you don’t like or agree with homosexuality that’s one thing but when the NATIONAL tv station is giving money as compensation because someone called them homophobic (when they clearly are!) it’s ridiculous!! I mean why can’t we sue the pants off these hate filled idiots when they say “can we cure gay?”or”it’s wrong and they’ll all rot in hell!”?
I lived in Vancouver a few years ago and my husband and I could walk around holding hands, kiss in the street and nobody batted an eyelid!! Why? Because over there everyone believes in live and let live.. Very simple really!! Then when I came home (although I don’t know why!) I was greeted by these hate filled, I can save you morans!! I don’t want to be saved thanks!! And I don’t want to stand around while these poison pushers get away with it!! Sunday.. 2pm outside the Gaiety!!
Btw I’m with my husband 14 years this year. So much for us ruining the sanctity of marriage!!

They have raised, as opponents of Gay marriage, some very valid points Jesco. They just didn’t realize they were – indirectly – raising valid points and they have misused research on gay parenting, when in fact if they dug a little deeper they could have exposed much of the underlying issues with the research. Either they didn’t dig deep enough, or they in fact found what they were looking for but didn’t use it as it didn’t bolster their case.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Despite myself, I think John Water’s has much to offer. After the gay marriage referendum is done and dusted and passed, Gay men will still find themselves secondary secondhand parents. Married or not. They will be treated just the same as all other male parents – like shit.

When that happens, feminism won’t even be there to bluff, nor will many in the LGBT community, liberal authors, conservative authors – none of them will be there.

But Water’s probably will still be writing about unmarried fathers, and by default, despite himself, unmarried gay fathers too.

When they send solictors letters and claim damages (allegedly..better be careful!) from the Taxpayer funded broadcaster to stifle free speech on the National Broadcaster,- then Yes, people are justtified in taking them seriously, – irrespective of how amusng you find it.. When the do so damn hypocritically it is especially aggravating, ie The RTE apology (presumeably vetted/influenced by Iona) asserts that the use of th word “homophobic” attempts to end the debate, yet they go legal, – nice way to “end the debate”

When they lobby the Consituional Convention, politicians, national broadcasters etc. then Yes, people are justified in having concerns.

    @Michael.

I know exactly what you mean. Exactly.

But Iona are helping gay marriage and rights. You couldn’t wish for better enemies. It’s quite funny tbh. I’ll stop short on calling them homophobic – just about though. We throw around terms like homophobic, misogyny, increasingly misandry too as if they meant much more than they do.

What’s important to me is that we don’t censor people or silence them. Censorship (and iona are laughably censoring others now} should not be entertained imo.

Does he now only represents gay constituents ? Hashe no interest in human rights issues unless he has a person interest ? Is this equality for him ?

    Chris,
    Be careful. This could backfire.
Perhaps this might be the situation, campaigner speaks out of turn on TV and names a sitting member of the BAI linking him to an accusation of homophobia. Lawyers send letters, RTE take action as a result, and people complain to the regulator that RTE did the wrong thing in taking that action.
The public and taxpayer (I would argue) don’t care. They do when the broadcaster is censored, but here, the broadcaster acted to prevent further legal action.
The courts may eventually be asked to adjudicate on the issue, and an allegation that subsequently proves to be unfounded will not end up with the intended result.
If Iona needed a stick to beat the LGBT movement with, this could prove to be it.

I think FG are happy to roll him out when issues such as LGBT rights are concerned for mass appeal, yet, I sense no substance from him and I’m inherently uncomfortable he’s become unofficial FG Government Minister for LGBT rights.

Anyone know if a Freedom Of Information request could be arranged to discover how large the sums of money were that were paid out by RTE to the aggrieved parties?

    €1,000 or €10,000 or €100,000?

As the Public Broadcaster perhaps PAC can get involved. This would appear to be a case of taxpayer’s money being paid out on a kneejerk whim on the basis of the religious leanings of the RTE executive.

Using our licence fees and tax payers money for compensations such as the claims the Iona Institute are making on their website are both objectionable and offensive. Shame on #RTE for rolling over on this, for poor judgements with regards to the apology Brendan O’Connor delivered, for editing and censoring Rory’s interview and for allowing a small lobby group bully them into all of this. #TeamPanti #LGBTIQ activists and other citizens with a keen sense of social justice will be in touch, will be out on Sunday and will not be letting this slide. We are society too and our opinions, our needs and the shapes of our lives deserve to be understood, protected and made equal in the laws of the land and not excluded or bullied, enough is enough! #solidarity #IONA #homophobia
