Get your telly ready: UTV Ireland to begin broadcast in early 2015

The Broadcasting Authority announced today that contract negotiations have begun.

UTV IRELAND IS set to begin broadcasting at the start of next year, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) announced today.

It said “negotiations for a television content provision contract” will be entered into shortly.

The Dublin-based station will be classed as “general entertainment”, but will also offer an hour-long prime time news programme.

“Documentary, drama and film content” is likely to be syndicated from other UTV stations.

However, in a statement this afternoon, the BAI said the elements of this contract would differ to other stations.

“There are a number of elements to a contract granted under this section of the Act which differ from the regulatory regime applied to the public service broadcasters, RTÉ and TG4,” it read, “and the commercial broadcaster, TV3 and its sister station, 3e, specifically in the areas of carriage, content, and levy”.

UTV Ireland are seeking a contract under Section 71 of the Broadcasting Act, which the BAI said is for content only.

“However, the contract does enable the contractor to negotiate carriage of the service and its prominence on the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), with the platform provider,” it said.

It’s strange. It was a bank holiday for myself too and I still found a way of having a drink and some fun without ending up in a scrap in town. Guess I’m just most fortunate than these poor revellers who didn’t have a choice.

@Jimmy Reid: as has been said many times, the troublemakers are not ‘revellers’. People who were in town to have a drink and meet their mates had a drink and met their mates. Those who went in to have a scrap had a scrap and some got arrested. We desperately need to separate the trouble from the outdoor eating and drinking in reporting and commenting . Otherwise there’ll be no one heading into our city centres for months.

I wonder, on a ‘normal’ June Bank Holiday how many arrests are done in Dublin City centre. Is there a whiff of sensationalism about these headlines. A fact check from the Journal here would show a bit of journalism or is it for clicks only.

@Alan Wright: exactly. Another thought I had was of all the nightclub bouncers who are still out of work thinking “welcome to our world”. I think it’s because the masses are of the view that if violence and anti social behaviour is limited to inside clubs and only in certain parts of the City, it doesn’t exist. How many times have you seen garda cars and vans outside some establishments on Harcourt street or O’Connell street or temple bar dealing with an incident? Every weekend? plus all the suburban clubs? I do believe they need to crack down and drive this away but you would swear Dublin was like Easter 1916 over the last few days…

That’s unlike any bank holiday I’ve ever witnessed. They all need a serious reality check, they respect nothing or nobody and these are the adults of the future. God help us.

I don’t know what you’re getting at? These filth need to be reeled back in well in advance of bars and restaurants reopening. I’ve literally never seen anything like it in town and I’m touching 40. Having travelled a fair bit too I don’t think this behaviour would be tolerated anywhere and that’s rich and poor countries.

@: There you go …Excuses already made. Some young people acted like thugs so the Guards are entitled to act like thugs as well and go and intimidate and harrass innocent people. Sorry but that’s not good enough. Imagine you are in a pub. There’s some trouble outside in the best garden that you’re not aware of. The owner decides to close the pub early. Now instead of making some sort of an announcement to inform people that he’ll will shut the premises and that they should leave he all of sudden appears at your table, grabs your pint and smashes it on the floor, pushes you in the back and shouts at you that you’ll get badly hurt if you don’t leave immediately. A group of them walking in line came from Temple Bar onto Dame Street. People that were close to that corner obviously didn’t see them coming and as there was no obvious trouble in this particular area surely nobody expected the street to be cleared by force all of a sudden. I think a lot of people are going to have a problem going back to normal. Going on holidays, packed trains/buses on morning commutes, going to packed nightclubs etc are not wrong or evil or dangerous behaviour and people need to prepare themselves that this is what we are going back to. You can wear your mask but as soon as the government say you don’t have to (probably a few months after every other country) the majority of the population will stop wearing there’s. So I’d suggest you prepare yourselve to go back to normal or avoid all such places for the rest of your life.

@Declan Doherty: no conspiracy, the facts are the country is opening up because covid is only a minor issue with all the vulnerable vaccinated, yet only lat week the cmo is tweeting his anger and Paul Reid came out during the week in a similar way, painting a picture of fear, threats of lickdown in limerick. None of what I have siad is conspiracy just facts.

There were plenty out and about in the sunshine in galway yesterday, crowd’s were meeting up having a few drinks and enjoying the weather and the bank holiday Sunday and there didn’t seem a need for baton charging gardai to move them on, so something is going badly wrong in our capital and needs looking into fast. Because this isn’t the image we really want to be projecting to tourists when they start arriving in a few weeks.
