Stress, finances and sexual issues...some of the things leading couples to counselling

During 2013, Accord delivered more than 50,000 marriage counselling hours to 9,890 people.

IRELAND’S BIGGEST MARRIAGE counselling provider saw an increase in demand for its services last year.

During 2013, Accord delivered more than 50,000 marriage counselling hours to 9,890 people.

Staff worked with 6,423 cases which included 56 per cent couples and 44 per cent individuals. The average number of sessions per couple or person was seven.

Among the list of top presenting problems were communication (not listening or ignoring), anxiety and stress,  conflict, intimacy, finance, sexual issues and emotional abuse.

Accord, the Catholic marriage care service, also provided 7,600 couples with marriage preparation courses.

“While an increase in demand for marriage preparation courses is a positive development, ACCORD figures also indicate an increase in 2013 in demand for our marriage counselling service and, sadly, this tells another story,” says Bishop Christopher Jones, the president of the group.

“Difficult economic times have put pressure on people and in turn on their marriage and on their family relationships.”

A mate of mine brings a framed picture of his missus out on nights out and places it on the table. He says when he looks at it and thinks shes good looking then hes drunk enough and its time to go home. Think I’ll recommend counselling to him!

Most of the sex issues in the bedroom we have in Ireland, I suspect, often stem from good old fashioned Catholic guilt.

That pre-marriage course is just a feckin money racket, and a pain in the arse sitting in a circle with a room full of strangers who are no more interested in you than you are them..
