Vincent Browne accepts Taoiseach's invitation to Castlebar - three decades later

In 1981 Kenny invited the journalist to spend a week with him to see the work he does in his constituency.

TV3 PRESENTER AND journalist Vincent Browne today accepted an invitation made by Taoiseach Enda Kenny in 1981 to spend a week in his constituency with him.

In an interview on TV3′s Late Lunch Live earlier today, presenters Lucy Kennedy and Martin King brought up the invitation, which was re-issued in a recent interview Kenny gave to Russia’s RTV.

Browne said he is willing to spend the week in Castlebar and he has written to the Taoiseach about it recently.

“I remember it was 1981 because it was the Late Late Show special and Gay Byrne asked me to come on and talk about politics, talk about politicians and I needed to read the Dáil debates to find out who had said what in the previous election and identify the people who said nothing,” he explained.

I noted that Enda hadn’t spoken at all since the previous election and I said that in the course of the Late Late Show discussion and Gay Byrne turned to him and said “is that true?” and he said it was, but then he went on about all the work he did in the constituency and I could come down and see all the work he did in the constituency any time and all that stuff.

The Taoiseach has previously said he ‘won’t do any programme’ involving Vincent Browne.

“I’m quite certain he has no intention of entertaining me in Castlebar for a weekend or whatever,” Browne added.

It looks like the ball is in your court, Taoiseach.

Hard to believe today how many of us watched these puppets after school on UTV kids TV in the 60s and 70s. They were kind of wooden but it worked!
