Actress Ellen Page comes out in inspiring speech

The actress said that she was “tired of hiding” and “tired of lying by omission”.

JUNO ACTRESS ELLEN Page last night publicly announced that she is gay.

Speaking at the inaugral Human Rights Campaign’s Time to THRIVE conference in Las Vegas, a visibly nervous Page said that she was proud to be on the stage.

“If we took five minutes to recognise each other’s beauty, instead of attacking each other for our differences, it’s not hard.”

She said that she drew on the courage of those in attendance, before adding.

“Loving other people starts with loving ourselves and accepting ourselves. And I am today because I am gay.”

(Human Rights Campaign/YouTube)

Page added that she felt a “social responsibility” to make the speech.

“Maybe I can make a difference to help others have an easier and more hopeful time.

I also do it selfishly because I’m tired of hiding and I’m tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered. My mental health suffered. My relationships suffered. I’m standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain.

The Inception star went on to say that LGBT people deserved to feel love fully. She said there “were too many kids being bullied” because of who they are.

Homophobic bullies are simply incapable of empathising with their victims.

People are abused and attacked just because they seem to be different.

Gay or straight, we just need to be kind to each other. So what if someone is gay. They just happened to be attracted to someone of the same gender. That does’t deserve abuse or hostility.

It is a brave and moving speech. Fair dues to her for making the speech and respect to her fir her courage in coming out.

The more who come out the more that straight people will come to accept and even to ignore gayness.

I find it odd that some straight people get so antagonistic about gay issues. We know the type. These are the straight people who only post comments on gay issues, seize every opportunity to whine abou too much coverage of gay issues and need to remind us that they are straight. Interesting phenomenon that.

That’s how much it matters to some backward morons – they made it illegal. It is also a stick to beat people with for the fundamentalist religious freaks of all hue.

Where do you get your numbers from? I would certainly question the accuracy. Five reported maybe. I believe the first hand account I have heard. I believe it because Russia has enacted anti-homosexual laws. That is a fact. The state harbours and encourages a hatred of homosexuals. Is that not true?

An article from the guardian may or may not be true. We can’t be sure. I believe anti-homosexual attitudes harbour hate, hate leads to violence. I believe the reports that people are being beaten and the police are turn a blind eye.

    Nice chatting to ya.

so you didnt read the article ?? if not you should and you should hold off on deciding the veracity of it until you do so

it seems ailbhe that you only believe what suits you ,while that article and others may or may not be true i feel personally they have the feel of truth about them and make sense to me,also russia is not afraid of international opinion as they have proved on countless occasions so i believe if they wanted more restrictive laws they would have enacted them by now !!

also ailbhe you claimed the other day that russia wanted to be part of the EU which shows a severe lack of understanding of Russia as a country, historically and contemporarily ,now there is nothing wrong with that nor does it make you stupid but it does mean i take your opinion on anything to the do with the country with a large pinch of salt

anyway yeah it was nice talking to someone about the issue without hysterics

I may have a desire to visit Uganda to experience a radically different culture from ours, but because of the way I was born, I could be killed for doing so.

I may have a desire to show affection to my other half on the street in Ireland, but because of the way I was born, I could be taunted and shouted at for doing so.

Ailbhe, well said. That is exactly what this continuous ‘I’m tired of gay stories’ is about. There is a definite section of society that are attempting to remove victim status from gay people by attempting to convince the general population that there is no animosity, assaults, abuse or predjudice against homosexuals. A misconception that could not be further from the truth. As far as I can see the gay community want the same human rights afforded to them that straight people have, no more no less. Seems like a simple concept.

Correct Boleyn! I am seeking to bring attention to the fact that all is not equal in this country at the moment.

I am seeking to bring attention to the fact that people like you still exist in this country, despite overwhelming sentiment in favour of equality.

I am seeking to bring attention to the fact that people like you have to set up fake Twitter accounts with no previous tweets, because they are not courageous enough to have views under their own persona.

So bravo on your observation sir/madam, your are exactly correct. And I must thank you for highlighting my intent.

Michelle, the worst of it is the ‘this is only the start’ brigade. I have seen people accuse the LGBT community of wanting special treatment, extra privileges. I’ve seen some claim that we want to turn everybody gay. I’ve seen some accuse gay women of wanting to reduce men to mere sperm donors. The scare-mongering that goes on is reprehensible.

I can confirm that I and any other gay person I have ever met simply wants equality. I want equal rights. I do not want to stand out, I do not want attention, I do not want special treatment.

Anyway folks, I’m going to leave it there.

The vocal minority will always be just that; vocal, and a minority. So we should really let them wallow in the fear of homosexuality that clearly encases their whole being, because why bother?

Rome wasn’t built in a day; there will always be homophobes.

But the reality is, when the referendum comes around, the people of this country in general are a moral, thinking people who would detest the type of behaviour displayed here by these faceless Twitter bigots.

So lest us not forget that although it is most important that we are regarded as equal citizens, we shouldn’t focus on the tiny minority hellbent to prevent it.

    Live and let live!

So it’s not ok to express an opinion on headlines and articles? Just like all the GSOC, HSE and CRC repetitive stuff, they get tiring after a while but it’s only when you express an opinion about seeing enough Gay Rights articles that you get attacked for it. There are too many people jumping on the “support Gay Rights” bandwagon, even the Mayor of New York has made a grave error of judgement in that regard.

No its not, but if 2 people of the same gender hold hands or kiss in public, that is. Heterosexuals can act as they wish, homosexuals cannot. Homosexuals have very limited rights and it is illegal for them to publicly complain.

Homosexuality is not currently illegal, but homosexuals are forced to hide the fact that they exist.

An article from the guardian may or may not be true. We can’t be sure. I believe anti-homosexual attitudes harbour hate, hate leads to violence. I believe the reports that people are being beaten and the police are turn a blind eye.

also ailbhe you claimed the other day that russia wanted to be part of the EU which shows a severe lack of understanding of Russia as a country, historically and contemporarily ,now there is nothing wrong with that nor does it make you stupid but it does mean i take your opinion on anything to the do with the country with a large pinch of salt

It only happened a few hours ago and it is the top story across the world; now ask yourself why. It’s because gay people get abuse every day and she is voluntarily opening herself to online and physical abuse. The ideal is that it wouldn’t have to be reported. The reality is that until hatred, fear, corrective rape and murder are a nightmare of history then gay & lesbian people will have to make a statement.

There’s no way in hell this will impact negatively on her. Carrie Prejean was a lot more brave, because she knew she’d be savaged by the “tolerant” majority.

They’re not the ones complaining about the inconvenience of having to read the article or watch the video. The subject of the speech is about all forms of discrimination and that should be, but isn’t of interest to everyone. How terrible to have to waste any time watching that video, yet people take so much time to complain about it.

    Excellent attitude! (Sarcasm)
Although perhaps in one sense you’re right. Who cares if she is gay? I don’t. Some people are gay, some people are straight, so what. Except what I do care about is that those who are gay don’t have equality with straight people. Why should I as a straight man be entitled to more rights as those who are gay? That’s just wrong.

People are gay, born gay. They should have the same rights and freedom as I and every other straight person has, and until they do they are right to make their struggle news, they are right to push the agenda.

Even if it does, so what? If someone chooses to be gay does that mean they are not entitled to the same rights as me?

And for what it’s worth, my answer to your question is no.

I wonder, did you choose to be straight because of the environment you were raised in?

Women go from gay to straight all the time so there’s hope for her yet. Sure half the women of Ireland start kissing their friends after a few drinks. All it takes is a real man like me to turn then back to the ways of straightness!

Dont know who sge is. And dont give a fiddlers about her private life.
Why shud she have to make public her desires?
    And why shud people care?
As long as media outlets see these events as viable stories the longer people will feel they need to publicly justify their orientation.
So what if some one prefers fanny to mickeyor vice versa, if news outlets concenteated on important matters it wouldnt take long for homosexuality to just happen and there be no uproar as the small few wuth issues wouldnt have a mass media outlet.

I know I’m going to get slated for this, but I don’t think celebrities are really helping the LGBT movement by “coming out” at these events. Wouldn’t it be much better to just be who you are, day in day out, date who you want, hold hands with who you want? I think that’s a far more arresting statement (if that’s what you want to make), than these public declarations that “I am gay”. For me these public outings almost affirm the ridiculous stigma attached to homosexuality, which doesn’t appear to be the best step in making homosexuality a “norm”. Once we start approaching sexuality as almost a non defining trait, then we’re really on the road to becoming more acceptable and less inclined to almost gasp when someone basically announces that they prefer X or Y sexuality.

I’m not attempting to slate Ellen Page, she seems like a lovely person, but this group congratulation on something that shouldn’t be a major issue is as degenerative to LGBT civil rights, as clapping heartily when a people who are mentally disabled get a job. It shouldn’t be a major deal because at the end of the day they are like you or I, so maybe we should stop the wild praise and realise that this is a human being doing what most human beings have/will do at some point in the present or future.

You make a very good point. Here’s a green thumb.

Jumping back into the debate, you’re quite right for the most part. True equality would reason that such an announcement would not be worth telling publicly, let alone make newsworthy material. But I wouldn’t necessarily claim that her “coming out” should be without praise. Indeed I think the really significant element of this story is that she is a young, beautiful successful actress who has manged to demonstrate that sexual orientation need not keep a good person down. And this, more than anything speaks volumes to any confused tweenager out there today.

In short, you are absolutely right in saying that such an announcement in the future should be treated with a prompt “Yeah, great”, but genuinely well known artists in film and entertainment (with the exception of theatre if the rumours are to be believed) whom are perfectly willing to label their homosexual orientation and are proud to show it are notoriously hard to come by. Now if this happens several times over in a short space of time then I hope the climate you envision will come to pass. Sorry my language is so cumbersome…

Have any of these so-called journalists actually followed up on her claim and done some fact-checking as to whether or not she really is gay? I mean, she’s an actress. She’s made a career out of successfully pretending to be other people, and doing it very well. Maybe you shouldn’t automatically take her at her word. (Not that she isn’t entitled to her privacy)
