Sean Kelly MEP (left) and Senator Deirdre Clune (right) Laura Hutton/Photocall Ireland

Here's who Fine Gael picked as European election candidates for Ireland South

The party held its selection convention this afternoon in Clonmel.

MEP SEAN KELLY and Senator Deirdre Clune have been selected by Fine Gael as their Ireland South candidates in the European elections.

They were the only two candidates to submit their names to run in the constituency.

Kelly, proposed as a candidate by Minister for Finance Michael Noonan, was elected to the European Parliament in 2009 and currently holds a seat in this constituency.

He recently waded into the neknomination debate, calling for legislation at European Union level to control content on social media.

Clune is currently the party’s Seanad spokesperson on Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation.

She was proposed for the position by Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney, who called her ‘very smart, honest & committed to public life’.

Clune – another dynasty candidate like Coveney. Clune lost her Dail seat in FG General Election landslide. What does that say about her chances. Another closed shop operation!

The chosen few who put themselves before the electorate it should be noted. There’s nothing stopping you or any of the crowd on here from running against them.

Don’t bother with anything sensible on here. Hurlers on the ditch best describes most who manage to find the negative in absolutely everything.
Most of the whingers won’t stand for election because they wouldn’t get enough votes to get their deposit back.
Truth is the electorate want people who offer solutions not negative defeatism. Thankfully Ireland has plenty of the former.

Really Ryan? I met Ms Clone…I mean Clune and have to admit I was underwhelmed. More a case of carrying on the family political business than of any great desire to achieve or improve in politics. Maybe a “steady as she goes and don’t upset the trough” rather than truly representing her electorate. And now wants us to send her off to the best paying half way house in Europe? No thanks!

I can’t for the life of me understand why people would be so negative about a government that has bent over backwards to fulfill all its pre-election promises, has run the country with a steady even hand, with honesty, transparency and shown real concern for the children and elderly of Ireland. A government that has been steering a bold economic course that has led to the greatest economic recovery in Europe.

Unfortunately, said government is not in power in Ireland at this time.

I almost gave them a preference in the last general election but I genuinely fear their desire to control the police, the media, the internet, the judiciary, all of us. They are control freaks.
They had a great opportunity coming in after the disastrous FF but lied throughout their election campaign – as did their minions in the Labour Party. I nearly fell for it but didn’t.

It amuses me that some days I’m accused of being SF, other days FG. Yet in reality I take things as I see them, rather than just joining in the anti-politics rants on here. I also try to correct facts that I know are wrong, like the one below about public schools. Sometimes that means my position agrees with SF, sometimes with FG, sometimes with Labour and even sometimes with FF.

I never said anything pro-FG. I’m just anti this anti-politics attitude that dominates here as it means people who could and should get involved don’t.
