3,000 people sign petition to save Moore Street's Paris Bakery

A room on the premises that has been boarded up for years is being inspected today to see if there are elements relating to the 1916 Rising present.

AROUND 3,000 PEOPLE have already signed a petition to save the well-known Paris Bakery on Dublin’s Moore Street.

Renowned for its delicious treats and freshly baked bread, the restaurant and delicatessen has hit the headlines for other reasons recently.

The Moore Street  bakery is set to be demolished with the loss of 70 jobs to make way for the construction of a €900 million Dublin Central shopping centre development.

Petition

In a bid to prevent the demolition, a petition was launched last week, and so far, over 3,ooo people have signed it.

The proposed development includes numbers 14 to 17 Moore Street which were declared a national monument because of their use in the 1916 Rising, however the Paris Bakery at 18 and 19 Moore Street also maintain that part of their building also has elements from the 1916 Rising and that they leave it be.

The developers Chartered Land were granted planning permission in 2010 for the shopping centre development but no construction has begun and the site is now part of Nama.

Last week, the Minister for Finance Michael Noonan announced that Nama would finance the restoration of the national monument buildings by Chartered Land.

Support

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, the Paris Bakery’s operational manager Stephen Cunningham said that the response they have received over the weekend has been “massive” stating that all weekend, people have been coming into the restaurant to offer their support. “All over Facebook and Twitter too there are great messages of support for us,” he said.

He said they could not afford to relocate the premises and would have to close the business when their lease expires in four months.

He said that this afternoon, Jim Connolly Heron, the great-grandson of James Connolly, who met with Minister for Heritage Jimmy Deenihan yesterday to discuss his concerns about the demolition of the bakery, is coming back to the restaurant today to inspect a room on the premises that has been blocked up for many years.

Cunningham said that Heron and a building surveyor are going to inspect to the room, and see if there is any evidence that it too has elements associated to the 1916 Rising.

He said that he could not understand how the demolition was approved when it will be “a loss in rent of over €17,000 a month and that it will be putting 70 families on the dole”.

Cunningham said that he had not had any correspondence or contact with Chartered Lands since the demolition of the bakery had been highlighted publicly.

Are you publicly claiming that the nominal owners of this site have paid Members of the present Government monies under the counter to facilitate the redevelopment of the property and that such behaviour is frequent and standard? Wow Les that’s some claim!
Or alternatively it’s outlandish rubbish and the type of claim that comes from a childish mind !

Richard Rodgers, is it any more outlandish than Minister Noonan agreeing to fund the restoration of the two buildings that will probably add more value to that particular centre, it may not be in a brown envelope but it looks like taxpayers money finding its way into a developers development. Remember everyone knew the likelihood of this memorial going ahead in time for 1916, therefore the developer/s should not get compensation as they should have done due diligence. I don’t think the bakery should get special treatment either, it is a commercial endeavour business is business.

Chartered Land is Joe O Reilly one of NAMAs biggest Property Developers whos loans of up to 3 billion euro are being payed off by the Irish Joe Public .

He is also one of the Maple 10 , Anglo 10 or Golden Circle Investers who were given money by Anglo to re-invest in its shares in order to prop up its balance sheet.

And yet he is still living the life of luxury with planning permission to wipe out Irish History , there is definitely something wrong with this country.

This guy was giving a short term lease and was advised of the future proposals for the street. I have a business on Moore street myself and there is no way is there 70 people working there unless they are working in the cellar.
I think the bakery is a great asset to the street and attracts great business clients-however the comments here prove that the street in its current condition attracts nothing but undesirables and is in desperate need of a clean up.
The first question most people ask when taking on a lease is its duration!!

Has anyone got access to the planning application in place on this building – I don’t believe it’s a shopping centre at all. As I said there is no way is there 70 people working there (most staff there are young students) come down and count for yourselves. These re development plans have been in place a long time prior to the bakery opening the doors. TK max will be opening In The ilac with entrance from Moore street also-works have already commenced. The plans in place will most definitely only improve Moore street and hopefully encourage more people to visit the street. The government aren’t knocking this building down. The article also stated that the 1916 historical buildings are been preserved and hopefully going to be a museum that people can view some Irish memorabilia. Looking forward to a much improved Moore street – it doesn’t make sense to leave it in its current condition.

The business is also a wholesale bakery employing a large number of skilled bakers. They’re not in the cellar, no, they’re out the back a kitchen that cost huge money to fit out and would cost another huge amount to move, working in shifts all through the night. It’s a 24 hour business. So yeah, there are 70 staff. Also, if you read the conditions if the lease agreement, you’d know why this is so unjust. Clearly you haven’t and are just excited about going against the grain. Well done. The best you can hope for here is being right and loads of people losing jobs including a core staff of management and owners (who aren’t all “foreigners” by the way) who have dedicated the last few years to trying to create something.

Laura the day the bakery opened I aired my concerns openly about Yannick the owner putting so much money into such a short term lease. Since then he foolishly poured more money into the bakery and expanded the unit. I am sure you haven’t read the lease – but at the end day it’s a four year eleven month lease which gives the Temnant minimum rights. Are you trying to say such a successful businessman like Yannick didn’t discuss the duration of the lease and the boundaries within his lease. My family have been trading on Moore street for over 100 years and were moved from the Henry street end to the Parnell street end with the promise of this development going ahead – they havent picked up a shovel in those six years. We once had 23 people employed and are down to 8 so of course I am happy to see This development FINALLY going ahead. The staff start at 5:am I am in my butcher shop myself now to facilitate deliveries – I see them going in the back door. Again putting so much money into something with a short term lease was ridiculous and foolish. All the LONG standing businesses have been awaiting on this development for over a decade. I don’t think the bakery should have any substance in delaying that.

@ Joe Power we Had (past tense) 23 people employed – we are now down to 8. Grab me a coffee too and I will gladly show who is registered on our paye cards. This development will create a lot more jobs than 70 or 23 – my comment of how many people were previously employed to our current staffing conveys less people visit Moore street. If the development went ahead I believe more people would shop on the street and create more jobs in all businesses on the street. The article said the building had planning permission for the said building to be demolished in 2010 – how anyone pumped funds into it since then is beyond my comprehension .

What a joke why on earth is there a shopping centre being built when we have the ilac and Jarvis street shopping centre a couple of hundred metres away the last thing we need is another shopping centre leave the bakery there and save the 70 jobs if it closes that’s more people on social welfare that don’t want to be on it and it’s 70 less people paying taxes causing the country more money as usual it’s the small business losing again

The area is littered with shopping centres and departments stores. The Ilac is across the road. Despite the snide comments being passed about junkies and the inhabitants of the Northside, Moore Street is one of the more interesting places still left in the city centre. The Bakery has become a real focus point since opening. Myself and every member of my family drop in when shopping in Dublin and it is popular across the board. Small things perhaps, but it shouldn’t be the case that everything nice or indulgent is restricted to overpriced cafes on Wicklow Street or close to Grafton Street. We should be incouraging small, idiginous and independant businesses not shafting them so another part of the capital can end up looking like Highstreet-on-Thames, Anywhereshire, UK.

And these aren’t numbers we are dealing with. It is 70 jobs but there are real people behind that number and many more will be affected by association.

In all honesty Moore at is a bit if a kip and Paris bakery is a welcome addition but in saying that any redevelopment in the north inner city is welcome. Just returned from a trip to Central Paris, beautifully preserved and maintained.

Hopefully the new shopping centre will bring something really new and refreshing to the city centre.

Perhaps an insomnia, a boots, an argos, a burger king, a jamba juice and maybe even a spar or a mobile phone repair shop or three. That sort of forward thinking is what is going to make D1 great again and make this mall something really special and unique to bring the crowds in.

I could have sworn the developer responsible for this shopping centre had the loan taken over by NAMA. Who bought it out and who now is developing this project?
Give me the Paris bakery and a 1916 dedicated museum any day over ANOTHER shopping centre and more apartments.
