30 Dublin councillors don't know how they feel about a directly-elected mayor

In a survey released today, 43 out of 129 councillors said they were in favour of proposals.

A SURVEY CONDUCTED by the Green Party has found that 30 councillors in Dublin have not decided whether or not they will approve a proposal to have a directly-elected mayor.

In the elections this year, Dublin voters will decide whether or not this is something they want and if the plan is approved, it would mean transferring powers from local authorities and State bodies, to the mayor’s office. However, this plebiscite can only take place if it also has the support of more than half of the councillors.

In its survey, the Green Party asked all 129 councillors if they were in favour or against the proposal. 43 declared they were in favour, seven said they would be likely to support such a vote, 12 were opposed to the idea and 30 were undecided. A further 37 were “unreachable after several attempts”.

Today the party said the results demonstrate the “confusion on this subject, with many specifying that they were unsure what Minister Hogan was intending to propose”.

Party leader Eamon Ryan accused the minister of leaving “a lot of people guessing on what his plans are”.

“Time and again councillors we spoke to said they were waiting to see what Minister Hogan was going to propose, and the time for debate is running out,” he said today. “The people of Dublin are being short-changed by the Minister and denied their democratic right to debate with each other and their councillors over what type of mayor they want, or if they actually want a mayor at all.”

He added that the failure to inform councillors is ” disrespectful to both local government and to the people who elected them as their representatives”.

@Mr Jerry Curtin: I like a nice coffee and travel a lot, most times its hard to find something like a good Italian bar. I tend to go with independents. Having tried many chains, to my surprise , the best of a bad lot turned out to be McCafe. With Starbucks and Tim Hortons way down the list. Java Republic would be mid table at best.

Starbucks I avoid like the plague not because of their coffee but because they avoid paying what I consider to be their fair share of tax across the globe and I think that is socially irresponsible. I’d much rather give my business to a small, indigenous independent.

There coffee is awful. I drink a lot of coffee. If I was to use coffee shops, it could cost me €20 plus a day. I buy Grumpy Mule coffee by the case on Amazon and make my own. Saves me a fortune and I’m guaranteed a good cup every time.

No their sick of them, by a long stretch……. Unfortunately you still see Storbucks & Costa and to a lesser but equally awfully tasting insomnia, packed out.

I’m lucky to have both Crew and Baobab roasters beside me for fresh lovely small batch coffee. Best coffee in the city is Kaph and A little place on Capel Street called Mish Mash. Bloody fantastic coffee and great staff. A good barista makes all the difference coupled with good fresh small batch beans. Large chains don’t hold a candle to them. Better to support local small businesses too.

I’m fine with the coffee in Costa, but I particularly love the friendly atmosphere and chatting with the lovely staff and other regulars in our local at Liffey Valley.

Starbucks began as small shop roasters in house was something different. Different selections of strength. When it grew into the monster it is, never go to it. Most large scale operation dole out harsh black coffee not everyone wants a red eye opener but its about all you get nowadays. Dunkin D sure it has vanilla and numerous other additions but easy drink it. Java is ok bit generic tasting, Red Rooster Bantham Brew i like.
