How far could you get in 36 hours with no money?

Over three hundred Irish students will find out when they take part in a jailbreak challenge tomorrow.

DON’T BE ALARMED if you see students running around the country tomorrow or frantically trying to get free flights at airports.

They have a good reason and you’ve been warned.

Four colleges in Ireland are taking part in a jailbreak challenge to raise money for St Vincent de Paul and Amnesty International.

Over 300 students will be trying their best to get as far away as possible without spending their money or money from people they know.

The colleges involved in the jailbreak challenge are:

  • Trinity College
  • University College Dublin
  • University College Cork
  • National University of Ireland Galway (Funds raised by Galway students will also be shared with Draiocht)

At 9am tomorrow morning students will set off in teams of two. They’ll start from:

  • Kilmainham Goal, Dublin
  • Eyre Square, Galway
  • The Quad, UCC Campus

Last year, the event was organised by Trinity students and it saw the winners of the challenge Claire Cullen and Matthew Hainbach making their way to Mirimar, south of Buenos Aires, Argentina. (11,295km from Dublin)

Some of the other teams made it as far as Sydney, Malaysia and Dubai.

I walked 7 miles in a storm once as I had no money for a taxi. What did I get ? Sore feet, that’s what!

Why? The fees in trinity are the same as any other university aren’t they? There’s no reason to suggest that people who go to trinity will have more money.

I applaud you working your arse off while earning a degree a trinners, but let’s be realistic here…

Spend an hour at the front gate of Trinity and an hour at the gate of Blanchardstown IT and then come back and tell us Trinity isn’t a more priveleged institution (despite the small minority of self-funded scholars).

Just because it isn’t true for you doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

20 years ago we were doing this as part of Rag Week. One year the winner was in Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. He made his way to Aldergrove in the North and from there hopped on 3 RAF flights in 24 hours to The Falklands. I think his uncle was in the RAF. It took him 5 days to get home! To be a student again….

How on earth to you get to Buenos Aries with no money, I wouldn’t get to Bundoran never mind anywhere abroad? Is it a case of just letting the airline/bus/trains know that you’re doing this for charity and hoping for seats??

I don’t see the harm in correcting them, it’s their bread and butter after all. If you seen an electrician wiring a socket backwards you’d correct him.

Just to be clear, if you’ve seen an electrician wiring a socket backwards, you should contact RECI or ECSSA to let them know there’s a cowboy on the loose.

Surely there must be points for going somewhere unusual. Australia is further than North Korea, but getting to (and into) nk would be far more impressive.
