'Small differences' can help you save up to €5,600 on life insurance

The National Consumer Agency compared four different companies to see how much could be saved – here’s what it found.

IF YOU’RE PAYING for life insurance, a few tweaks could help you save up to €5,600.

That’s according to the National Consumer Agency Survey, which looked at a number of companies and their offers.

The NCA’s life insurance comparison survey revealed that consumers can make potential savings of up to €3,087 on mortgage protection insurance.

Couples, meanwhile, could potentially save up to €5,687 on dual term-life insurance and €3,881 on joint mortgage protection insurance.

Differences

The survey revealed that “small differences in monthly premium payments” can result in significant savings over the term of the policy, said the NCA.

The survey also showed that smokers pay on average 85 per cent more for their life insurance.

The NCA looked at six of the main insurance companies in Ireland.

Four profiles were used to gather quotes on term life insurance, mortgage protection insurance and whole of life insurance.

Findings

The most significant findings in relation to cost, showing the difference between the cheapest and most expensive quotes, were:

  • €5,687 over the life of the policy, or a difference of €13.54 per month, for a 23-year old couple, who both smoke, seeking dual term life insurance cover of €350,000 for 35 years
  • €3,881 over the life of the policy, or a difference of €9.24 per month, for a 23-year old couple of non-smokers, seeking joint mortgage protection insurance of €350,000 for 35 years
  • €2,363 over the life of the policy, or a difference of €13.13 per month, for a 45-year old smoker seeking term life insurance cover of €190,000 for 15 years
  • €1,135 over the life of the policy, or a difference of €6.31 per month, for a 45-year old non-smoker seeking term life insurance cover of €190,000 for 15 years

Fergal O’Leary, director of consumer contacts and insights at the NCA, pointed out that mortgage protection and term life are long-term insurance policies, and aren’t renewed annually, so it’s important to do research before you take out cover.

Our survey highlights that what can seem like a small difference in monthly premiums can result in a large saving over the policy term. For example, a difference in a monthly premium of €2.74 for a 23-year-old non-smoker seeking term-life insurance cover over 35 years results in a saving of €1,151 over the policy term.

He urged people to compare the quotes from a number of companies and/or brokers before they take out cover.

Smokers

The survey shows that smokers pay, on average, 85 per cent more for their life insurance.

For example, they looked at a 45-year-old consumer seeking cover of €190,000 for 15 years.

If this consumer did not smoke they would pay on average €32.26 per month, however, if they do smoke they would pay on average €63.36 per month.

O’Leary said that if you haven’t smoked in the past 12 months, “you may be able to substantially reduce the amount you pay on your monthly premiums”, so you could check this out with your provider.

Mortgages

The NCA’s research also considered how changes in relation to mortgages may impact on mortgage protection or term life insurance.

It was found that if there is a change to the original mortgage, the existing policy may not be sufficient and you may be left with a shortfall in cover.

O’Leary also advised that anyone who is thinking of making changes to their mortgage, to inform their insurer in writing.

For more help, the NCA has a website that you can visit.

Thanks to Three, our broadband speed is about 0.16Mbps. They received 90 million euro from the government and are contractually obliged to provide 2.3 in rural Ireland under the Rural Broadband Scheme. Three couldn’t give a toss. They took the money and did f. all.

In order to get out of the contract with Three, they demand 250 euro! It’s a disgrace.

If you are looking for a decent download speed try Zurich Airport.
On my recent travels I got just under 100 Mbps.
I downloaded a full HD movie in no time.
Ireland is as usual still insular in this respect.
    And “E I R C O N” is a company full of false promises.

Can’t stand Three, with them myself, absolute nightmare. €35 a month for 60G and the pleasure of brutally slow download speeds, random outages, useless and unhelpful tech support and, to crown it all, the lovely cancellation fee of €325 when I lost patience and demanded to leave. Roll on November, never again. Greedy shower of incompetents couldn’t give a fiddler’s fcuk about their customers.

You should be easily able to cancel your contract if the guaranteed speed cannot or will not be provided to you. All contracts have two sides. You agree to pay a specified amount and the other party agrees to provide the service. If they try to take you to court you should win without question.

Kim I fell for the three broadband also. Read many reviews so was aware of the problems but as it was my only real option I thought it was worth the risk given the price. When modem arrived it seemed to work ok but a month in things went downhill. It completely stopped working. Once you have a problem you are screwed as they have the worst customer service I have ever encountered. It took me 4 months of endless phonecalls and letters. Writing directly to their CEO and threatening to go to comreg and returning their modem eventually got attention. A service team came out and said I should have received a booster aerial and also found the modem was dodgey. I eventually got a booster and better modem and a refund of payments made. It works a bit better now but is still very very inconsistent and nowhere near the service they are contracted to provide. As soon as a viable alternative comes my way Three will be out the door.

Yes but when you get broadband you are not promised that you will get lets say 8 meg its sold as up to 8meg so somewhere between .5 meg and 8 or however they word it sad thing is the further away from the exchange the less chance you have of getting decent speeds anything beyond 6km is pretty poor up to that you should have a reasonable connection and some even get it up to 8.5-9km depending on line conditions
Further into the country you go the worse it gets with badly maintained electric fences on farms running in close proximity of telephone lines causing interference and slower than normal speeds

They word it saying “up to xmbs” depending on distance from the local exchange and various other factors.
I vaguely remember a call for service providers in the UK to set minimum speeds in their advertising, so instead of saying up to 30mbs they should say at least 10mbs but up to 30mbs. Its reasonable to say what people can expect to get when paying for a service instead of hoping to get.

Its a 2 pair not a multi core
Yes one pair is only used but if the modem isnt connected to the main point then you are at the mercy of whoever wired the house as to the quality of your connection
Some homes were wired using untwisted stranded alarm wire as phone cable thats rubbish for broadband but works fine for phone service
Others have extensions connected off wrongly for extra phones or alarms etc and if they are unfiltered they kill broadband

Offer to pay them to have their technical people correct the problem. If they fail to fix it then they have no case against you if you cancel your contract. If however they do fix it then you did have a problem and now it’s all working well so it would be worth the cost.

About 45mbs down and 14.5mbs up on eFifbre, but then the speed better be damn good because you’re paying enough for it.
Here’s an interesting link from the UK regarding the naming and shaming of the streets there with the slowest broadband speeds. It’s also interesting to note that my download speed is considerably faster than many of their fastest, although theirs is possibly not through fibre – and no doubt costs a lot less.

Sorry Niall but considering the internet isn’t magic and you need to physically lay fibre it costs a lot. 5Mbps will stream HD video and a 30 min 720p X264 TV show is only maybe 150 Mb which shouldn’t take more than a minute to download at full whack.

What happened to 4G solving this problem. How much did it cost for RTE to go digital so that bandwidth could be sold to multinationals. We all sufferer higher licence fees and had to purchase a saorview box to allow these companies to profit providing a service that is described as a human right. That plan must have failed or these same companies have failed to deliver the service promised. Pointless asking if the rabbit lied again it’s a trademark by now.

The problem in this country is that every broadband provider bar UPC ‘piggyback’ off Eircoms lines. So as a rule of thumb, your Eircom bb is crap, then whoever else you sign up to in your area wont be any better unless Eircom upgrade the lines(which they cant do in most cases as they’re nearly bankrupt). Upc have their own fibre power bb lines installed but depending on the area its hot and miss. Im paying for 8gb bb in my home, since the storms download speeds have been 0.22 mbps , and thats down from 0.76mbps. Its a complete crime that im paying for a service and they’re not providing it, they along with every other bb provider have their arses covered with legal jargon in the small print.

Generally speaking I don’t get the full rate, but it’s usually at least 20 downstream & I’ve very often had my upstream rate faster than download rate! Great when I’m working from home, most of my colleagues are outside main urban areas so can’t dial into a meeting using voip when they need to present material. But rural communities suffer from extortionate prices for limited services provided. You’d swear these BB companies don’t make enough money to make a few upgrades at local exchanges or even at that, the government pulls the finger out of their holes and start investing properly on communications throughout the whole country. I find this whole broadband thing pretty weird. I mean when you think that Ireland is one of the top countries for its size for mobile phone use… You’d think we’d have top of the line technology infrastructure.

When I moved here from the US, I thought I could fortify my income with Web development. Unfortunately, the bi – directional upload/download speed was so poor that I had to abandon this idea.

Sadly, I pay for the top tier UPC rate for the fastest speed…. Still I average about 100mbs. Which I think is very slow for the money.

It looks (as usual) as if clusters around towns and villages will be served but if you live in the country outside these selected areas there is still no prospect of a broadband service being provided. I’m tired of hearing about urban areas getting faster and faster speeds with a choice of providers while rural areas are still dependent on pathetic speeds or none at all depending on proximity to some distant mast.

I think in terms of future proofing we should be going for fiber to the home rather than fiber powered as UPC offer. This type of service means that your connection is not slowed down by contention ratios. I appreciate that this would only make sense in larger towns and cities around the country.

There was no sidebar … On the day I signed up the sales guy had his laptop showing we where in an Efibre area and that it was on in the area.
Houses on the next road down from me have Efibre .
Eircom are just a bad company .. Bad customer service.. Bad working practice ..
They have cutback so much on staff that they just don’t have anyone to connect it.

I’m getting about 170 Mbps by combining magnet, my 4g connection and… A random other connection using http://www.connectify.me a Kickstarter funded software application for Windows and Mac that combines various connections. Highly recommended.

Get about 100 Mbps in the city centre. I bought a tiny 7 euro USB WiFi adapter off eBay so use three connections with the software in the city by connecting to various free coffee shop WiFi and mobile 3g or 4g.

Doesn’t work so well in the middle of nowhere but it cam combine as many 3g connections as you have ports and WiFi cards on your computer so give it a try if you’ve got poor speeds.

If your ISP is not providing what they were contracted to do contact the regulator and complain when they want to charge you for moving elsewhere. They soon cop on on it is a contract the same as any other you enter into, My ISP could not give me the basics of what they were offering when I told them I wanted to cancel they said I would have to pay a cancellation charge. Contacted regulator, paid nothing.

If your isp is not providing anything near what you contracted to contact the regulator. Dont bother after minimum exchanges with your isp; and there disconnection fees. No or service well below what you are paying for means you can extract yourself without incurring charges.

Moved to a small town in the midlands and have been trying to get broadband since Jan!. Ineptaphone were good value but like my experience with 3tard mobile a few years ago ,you are screwed if there is any trouble due to shocking customer service. The issue it a seemed was with the line and I had to contact direcom. After an hour + on hold I was told to call back in 4 weeks just to see if the his house could even get broadband. I’ve been using my phone data connection, 1 or 2 GB a month since the start of the year. I might as well wait for googles balloons or facebooks solar drone gliders at this point.

If anyone gets the opportunity go to UPC.

Been with them for 5 years easy. Have given us 2 free speed upgrades.

Started on either 25 or 50mb, upgraded too 100mb for free, then upgraded us a year later to 200mb for free.

I live just off a main road between two big enough towns which have both been upgraded to fibre since before Xmas. There’s a school with fibre 500m from my place.

There’s businesses on the road and they’ve been trying to get UPC to come out to them for the past 2 years with no luck. The recent Eircom upgrade doesn’t seem to have done anything for our speeds, 4.2 down and 0.42 up, sometimes slowing to 3.9 down.. It’s rather annoying, when we had WiMAX in the town it was faster.
