Resurrected Ripper St to bring Victorian crime back to Ireland*

*Don’t worry, it’s all for TV.

DUBLIN’S DARK ALLEYS and spooky streets will find themselves on film again when Ripper St returns to the capital for its third series.

Though the show was cancelled at the end of its second series, a new deal with Amazon has led to its resurrection.

Boost

The first and second series brought a boost to the value of €20 million to the Irish economy, and this time around it’s hoped that the country will benefit again from the spend on local goods and services.

The show is returning thanks to a new deal involving Amazon Prime Instant Video, and filming is set to begin in May.

The announcement was made today by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and Element Pictures, who said that Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, and Charlene McKenna will all be returning to our screens in the show.

Ripper Street is about the notorious H Division, which was the police precinct charged with keeping order on the mean streets of Victorian Whitechapel.

Tiger Aspect’s head of drama, Will Gould, said that the previous series saw highs of eight million viewers, while the show itself was sold to over 150 countries, was Bafta-nominated and voted Radio Times best show of the year.

Of the show’s cancellation and resurrection, he said:

That’s some journey. And of course we’re indebted to our incredible fans that have been so vocal and passionate and spurred us on. The third series promises to be the best yet.

James Hickey, Chief Executive at the Irish Film Board, said it was “very good news for the Irish film and television industry”.

Ripper Street has benefited from the Irish Film Board’s International Production Fund, which aims to attract major TV and film projects to film on location in Ireland.

The production will be based in Clancy Barracks in Dublin for several months and the previous two series employed 5,000 Irish cast, extras and crew.

Great show, a favourite at my house AND a good boost to the Irish film industry – delighted it’s been saved. Wouldn’t agree it was necessarily “better” than the last series of Sherlock – it’s just a very different type of programme. Ripper Street is far more flexible than Sherlock in terms of its plot lines. The Sherlock team’s brilliance is that they straddle the line between being contemporary and staying true to the original story. I’d compare Ripper Street quicker with Whitechapel than Sherlock. PS: I hope Whitechapel is saved too.

great viewing……once i got over all the raping and pillaging……i did notice that for all the battling there is very little sign of blood other than what is splashed over their faces……i hide my eyes when the fighting scenes come on…..loved the scene last week of them talking about Oden in glowing and gory detail and then asking the priest about his god!!!! great writing.
