Fireman Eli Brace jumped in to the water to rescue a drowning woman. (Photo credit: Sean Curtain)
A MEMBER OF Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service, Eli Brace, is being hailed a hero after he jumped off a bridge yesterday to save a drowning woman.
The Shannon-based Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 115 had been dispatched to help out in the river rescue, but due to high winds the winchman could not reach the woman.
Fire officer Brace then jumped from the bridge.
The woman was being swept under the water when Brace rescued the woman from the water.

Huge respect to the fire service personnel who helped rescue this lady yesterday. That is public service in its true sense. I know who I would be (re)naming a bridge after in Limerick and it wouldn’t be JFK!

Above and beyond the call of duty a real Hero
Brave man to jump in, but I’m wondering what the person in the boat is doing? Surely they are in the best position to help….
A friend of mine saw it happen and said that the winchman had to back off because the lady was being carried under the bridge with the current, so he signalled for the boat (which had just arrived on scene) to come in and take over the rescue. She was then dragged into the boat by the boatman with assistance from the fireman who jumped in.
Kudos to all btw, and a good end result.

Ron , as far as I know he wasn’t a member of rescue service but a member of a local rowing club who arrived up river as the firefighter was jumping in. The winch man from helicopter was unable to get to the lady involved so the fireman made the call that he had to go in. They got the lady into the boat together and brought her to boat club where ambulance was waiting. Man in boat a hero also.
A true hero and these are the frontline staff that media/government try to turn the private sector against in the public sector. Remember that the next time y

I cannot understand all the red thumbs for what this gentleman did,a real hero the height alone from the bridge to the water is frightening. I don’t think there could be many stupid people like Lenny around maybe that accounts for the red thumbs!
The whole red/green thumb thing in my view is of no benefit to the debate unless those who use it follow up with a constructive comment for what they are red thumbing.I would challenge the Journal to select a few articles weekly whereby anyone who wants to red thumb is then forced to comment on why or else the thumbing is not accepted.Add to this a function which allows the thumbed person to view who thumbed them. And here we go, bring on the red thumbs.
