Japan decides bitcoin isn't a currency, but will be taxed

Under the new regulations, the Japanese government will treat bitcoin like any other goods and services, and will tax any transactions made using it.

JAPAN’S GOVERNMENT HAS said it doesn’t consider bitcoin to be a real currency, but will tax any transactions made using it.

The crypto-currency will be treated like any other goods and services, with commercial sales of bitcoin itself and bitcoin-based transactions subject to sales tax. Any gains on exchange rates will be taxed as well.

Commercial banks, however, are not allowed to offer bitcoin as a product to their customers, or open accounts that hold it.

In a statement from the Japanese government, it said that bitcoin “does not fall under the category of a currency” as defined by Japanese law, and “generally speaking it is subject to taxation if it meets conditions laid out in income tax law, corporate tax law and sales tax law, among others.”

The Japanese government was under pressure to come up with some form of regulations following the collapse of MtGox, the Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange that filed for bankruptcy last week.

The move could be the first step towards more formal regulations, although the Japanese government has said it has no plans to regulate it as a financial product.

Earlier this week, the UK tax authority said it will not impose the 20 per cent tax on the creation of bitcoin, although corporation and income tax would still apply.

Verbal abuse to an elderly man or woman hurts more than physical, especially when they have no inclination as to why they are being roared or screamed at. Cruelty from family members is much more commonplace that people realise….I am sorry to admit that I have first hand knowledge of this. Thank God I was able to get my family member away from the terror. Be ever watchful for your elderly parent relative or whomever if you can at all.

Awful comment Patrick yet again bringing up the abortion issue in to every topic. There is no comparison between an old person being mugged and beaten up and a woman choosing to have an abortion for one of many valid reasons. By the way an old person suffering who wishes their life to be ended should have that wish granted. I for one with all due respect for people in these awful situations, would not want to be alive and suffering if I had something like locked in syndrome, an absolute living nightmare surely. That gentleman in England a while back I can’t remember his name but the way him and his wife were treated was inhumane. Back to the article, there are some terrible disgusting crimes but of them all the one of attacking elderly people is the most despicable of them all and truly sickens me. The perpetrators of such dreadful attacks should made to suffer in ways far far above what the law currently allows. I’m talking acid, hammers, scalpels, ropes, bullets, guillotines, super high voltage electricity etc.

I didn’t read the article fully and thought it was about criminal attacks on elderly by s…bags but it is more about abuse from those they know. Horrible of course but though I believe in what I said it was off topic sorry

Abusing elderly people is (in my opinion) probably the most cowardly thing in the world! It pisses me off even to think about it!

Elder abuse is horrific, in all its forms. People need to be vigilant. No one deserves abuse but especially the elderly

What the abusers forget – is that one day they will also be older like the people that they are abusing..

It is very sad to say, but a reasonable observation; that as Irish society drifts into abuse of the pre born, it is only natural that the erosion of respect for life, will express itself in the form of increasing levels of abuse, directed at the elderly. It is only a matter of time, as long as it takes to kill the frog in the slowly rising water temperature, before it is considered “just” to not only mistreat and abuse elderly; but to relieve them of their suffering.
All of life from conception to natural death is a continuum, as soon as we justify meddling in that, then all justice, all rights are up for grabs. God help us and our non catholic, catholic Taoiseach. .

I think I can speak for many when I say STFU. Keep your backward, bishops ring kissing, child abuse ignoring, ignorant views away from debates that have nothing to so with abortion.

So Stephen, I actually commented on the article, whereas you just let off some steam. The increasing violence toward the elderly, is not an isolated aspect in society, and abuse in endemic. You’re response toward my comment, which merely asks society to look at itself as a whole, is typical of the abusive response that persons have today, the intolerance that inevitably leads to violence towards the vulnerable. I have my beliefs, just like you have your ideologies. Take a breath and be reasonable.

You brought abortion, god and the religious beliefs of Enda Kenny into a debate on elder abuse. You need to cop on and stop trying to turn everything into a debate about the abortion. Just curious, what does Endas religious beliefs have to do with elder abuse?

    @ Stephen McMahon
The idea that every aspect of our lives is compartmentalised and unaffected by other aspects of our beliefs, society, media etc., is naive. The reason for elderly abuse, is because the abusers have developed intolerant, selfish traits in all aspects of their lives. Persons beyond themselves are unworthy of opinion or care, and should “STFU”, to borrow an expression. Faith, and all those who promote faith, calling us to be unselfish and self sacrificing, are an unacceptable intrusion into the kings world of self.
Enda is just typical of the post Christian society we now crave, those who seek popularity by aligning themselves to the baser instincts of society. If he rejects the Christian base of moral and ethical standards for his life and political decisions, from what well does he draw?

@Paddy l,Christian base of morals and ethics? So only Christian’s can have the monopoly of morals? Would you please stop! You get better moral guidance from a Comic book than the hypocrisy spread in the Bible. The likes of you and Stephen McElligatt preaching so arrogantly about faith give the non deluded Catholics a bad name.

Trying to spin a story about abuse of the Elder(which is disgraceful) and turn it into your own personal agenda on abortion is just pathetic. Violence and abuse have been in society long before any legislation on abortion, not to mention the abuse supported and covered up by the Church you so clearly are indoctrinated in.

What happens with all these referrals? Where are the reports on all the prosecutions? The HSE passes on these referrals to the Guardi who in turn do nothing. No substantive laws , no significant prosecutions, not even a mandated reporter system in place. It seems that those who could write the laws or enforce them forget that they too will one day be elderly, and should hope that this issue doesn’t come back to them. For a little insight into how complicated this issue becomes look at DoloresMaxwell.com
