Mandate union withdraws from strike action at DAA

General Secretary John Douglas said they will attend a meeting with the expert panel this Friday.

MANDATE TRADE UNION have withdrawn from Friday’s strikes action at the Dublin Airport Authority.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, General Secretary and ICTU President John Douglas said that the union had received an invitation last Friday to attend talks with the expert panel who have been established to consider the issues with the pension scheme.

Strike action

Douglas said, “we have decided to defer the strike action until we know the outcome of the meeting”. He added that SIPTU, who have already met with the panel, did not change their opinion, but that Mandate would “wait and see” what comes of the talks on Friday.

Last week, the Department of Transport has set up a four-person expert panel earlier to see if a resolution of the issue can be secured.

Mandate represent workers work in the retail sector of the airport.

Last week, DAA and Ryanair announced that they would go to the High Court to seek an injunction against the strike action that is due to take place over the busy St Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend.

DAA said the industrial action is contrary to the provisions of the Industrial Relations Act.

That application is due to be heard in the High Court tomorrow morning before noon.

Employees and management have been at loggerheads over a long-running dispute over a €700 million deficit in the workers’ pension fund.

Nothing to do with the lack of public support that they were getting then?

Grow a pair of balls Mandate and stand up to the government. No body likes strikes but if it’s the only way for the workers force to get what they are entitled to then so be it .Wait and see if Siptu will hold their nerve.

The government isn’t involved in this dispute. You may as well urge the unions to stand up to Sarah Palin.

Well lordbarret whatever thats about if you paid over 50 grand into a compulsory pension and your employer pissed it away I reckon that gives an entitlement to strike.. Aer lingus And Daa paid so many staff and management off early with big deals and destroyed the pension. I hope siptu win their case and shut the place down .. Employees being told they’ll get 10 cent for every euro contributed..

To add to Eddie Quinn comment paying into the pension fund was a condition of employment in Aer Lingus and deductions were compulsory.

It’s time for the Government to introduce legislation to ban these type of strikes!

Such strikes will do irreparable damage to the Tourist Industry in Ireland but clearly Jack O Connor and SIPTU do not care what damage they cause!

Jack O’Connor supported “benchmarking” which destroyed Ireland Inc – it did not improve productivity!

Ireland Inc is bankrupt! Recognise the facts and the truth!

Efforts are being made to restore Ireland’s credibility and SIPTU plans to destroy us again!

Jack O Connor is destroying Ireland for the second time. Jail is too good for him.

He should be dismissed from all Government appointments and Government should withdraw all financial support to SIPTU!
