Man freed from Death Row after 26 years as judge rules he was innocent

The 64-year-old was freed following new information which showed he was not present at the murder he was accused of.

A MAN WHO spent nearly 26 years on death row in Louisiana has walked free of prison, hours after a judge agreed to set aside the man’s murder conviction in the 1983 killing of a jeweller.

Glenn Ford, 64, had been on death row since August 1988 in connection with the death of 56-year-old Isadore Rozeman, a watchmaker for whom Ford had done occasional work. Ford had always denied killing Rozeman.

Ford walked out the maximum security prison at Angola on Tuesday afternoon, said Pam Laborde, a spokeswoman for Louisiana’s Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

Asked as he walked away from the prison gates about his release, Ford told WAFB-TV, “It feels good; my mind is going in all kind of directions. It feels good.”

Ford told the broadcast outlet he does harbor some resentment at being wrongly jailed:

Yeah, cause, I’ve been locked up almost 30 years for something I didn’t do.

“I can’t go back and do anything I should have been doing when I was 35, 38, 40 stuff like that,” he added.

State District Judge Ramona Emanuel on Monday took the step of voiding Ford’s conviction and sentence based on new information that corroborated his claim that he was not present or involved in Rozeman’s death, Ford’s attorneys said.

Ford was tried and convicted of first-degree murder in 1984 and sentenced to death.

“We are very pleased to see Glenn Ford finally exonerated, and we are particularly grateful that the prosecution and the court moved ahead so decisively to set Mr Ford free,” said a statement from Gary Clements and Aaron Novod, the attorneys for Ford from the Capital Post Conviction Project of Louisiana.

They said Ford’s trial had been “profoundly compromised by inexperienced counsel and by the unconstitutional suppression of evidence, including information from an informant.” They also cited what they said was a suppressed police report related to the time of the crime and evidence involving the murder weapon.

Currently, there are 83 men and two women serving death sentences in Louisiana, according to Laborde.

A Louisiana law entitles those who have served time but are later exonerated to receive compensation. It calls for payments of $25,000 (€18,000) per year of wrongful incarceration up to a maximum of $250,000, plus up to $80,000 for loss of “life opportunities.”

States with the death penalty have a higher murder rate. There is no deterrence. The person committing the murder will be off their heads, panicking, mentally unstable or extremely enraged. They won’t be thinking about the death penalty and many believe they will never be caught or don’t care about death.

I don’t believe he has admitted it, that seems to be a media hoax.
There is however significant evidence pointing to his guilt such as the eyewitness who described in fine detail the getaway car which was a rare model Pontiac painted white and with an out of state registration, Carters car was this rare model Pontiac painted white with out of state plates. What are the chances of two such cars being in the same close vacinity at 2:30am?

On a related note, if stories like this aren’t an iron-cast argument for abolishing the death penalty I don’t know what is. The man was set up and could have paid for being in the wrong place at the wrong time with his life. He’ll never get the time served back. He’s been on Death Row for decades. How is he supposed to integrate back into society?

Kevin I must be extreme but these things do happen. Let say a man rapes and murders you wife and your daughter. Let’s say he makes mother watch then kills her after unspeakable tortures.

Rule out death sentence then?? Fair play if you could because no way I could.

I think final judgement on death sentence should be decided by victims family.

This lad above was victim of racisim or profiling or shaddowy police work so keep death sentence and ensure a higher standard of police work and trials

In your example would I feel guilt? No absolutely not. Its the courts job to convict. Its their problem after that. If your told by state this lad did it you should believe that. If that’s false many years later its those that accused him and found him guilty are solely to blame.

I know its not in any way a deterrent. But its ridding the world of something awful.

I’m sure a few victims of Anders bravik would like to see him dead. Others would like to see him dead. Nothing to do with me but my opinion a long drop short stop

Adam, he was convicted TWICE by juries. Because Hollywood made a movie full of errors and because of Dylan’s song which also has errors he was let off. There’s lots of sources on the web that strike me as truthful. See this one http://www.graphicwitness.com/carter/index.html

If this man had been put to death wrongly then the state would have been guilty of murder. Who then within in that system could be executed for that murder. The death sentence is abbhorent in everyway regardless of any attrocity or crime commited. Cases like this are proof its wrong & there are many.

What’s that Jason , we make people sit on death row for 26 yrs to reflect on a crime they didn’t commit . The death penalty has no place in a civilised society . The companies that make the drugs for lethal injection won’t even supply them anymore .

So they have dumb police as well, thankfully its not a posthumous pardon. As Albert Pierrepoint, who knew a thing or two about executions said “It is said to be a deterrent. I cannot agree…. I do not now believe that any one of the hundreds of executions I carried out has in any way acted as a deterrent against future murder. Capital punishment, in my view, achieved nothing except revenge.”

The death penalty is and always will be wrong. To wrongs do not make a right. The death penalty is murder as it is the intensional taken of a human life.

Vast differences in many standards in USA. Southern states are very conservative. Third world infant mortality rates, frequent incidences of this kind of injustice, & trying to disenfranchise the poor through “jump through a hoop” ID laws. Tax revenues come from sales taxes that even fall on food so the rich pay less than anywhere. It is STILL the old SAfrica down there , really. Pig- ignorant , backward place most Americans view with the same contempt one sees on here this morning.

This is exactly why the death penalty does not work.
This mans life has been wasted in prison when he was innocent all along
How typical he is black, poorly educated from a poor area. It’s always the same.
I hope he sues the American government for everything he can. Write a book and be rich. He deserves it all.

Anyone who kills, rapes, abuses anyone deserves to die, I’m sick of listening to do gooders, “these people have human rights aswell” they lost their “rights” the minute they chose to commit their crimes.if your on death row, your not there because you stole a car, your there because you did something horrific. A documentary was shown a while back, Trevor McDonald on death row, one inmate had raped a 3 year old in front of her mother, then murdered them both. I hope he died screaming. He deserved it.

While I did watch that show about death row with Trevor McDonald it was an itv show and one sided. How about you stop being a sheep and do your own research about death row like I do.
I am a member of the innocents projects and if you look beyond itv and watch real stuff you will know innocent people are being released at least once a month in America for being innocent .
This has just made the news. Typical sheep led by media.

This man wasnt innocent, he was guilty, therefore he deserved to die, HE RAPED AND MURDERED A CHILD IN FRONT OF HER MOTHER, cop on to yourself , what if that was your baby? The chair was too quick for him, and no I’m not a sheep, but I do believe people who commit crimes like this deserve to die & I make no apologies for it. Now back on your do gooder bus
