YOU MAY REMEMBER we reported last month on a proactive trend being promoted by the Student Network, called #RAKnominations.
The ‘RAK’ stands for Random Act of Kindness and was a direct and positive reaction to the dangerous #neknomination craze that saw young people put themselves at risk by daring each other over social media to throw down shots or pints of alcohol.
The Student Network decided to get a different ball rolling with a Random Act of Kindness, and took to the streets of Dublin to distribute food to the homeless.
Then, they got to nominate three others to carry out a #RAKnomination. One of those three – Slattery Communications – took up the challenge and at the end of their rainy day cheer-spreading project (see video), nominated another three, including…. TheJournal.ie!
So, never shy of adventure, TheJournal.ie staff have been volunteering at Age Action’s superb Getting Started programme, which aims to get older people comfortable with going online. They learn everything from email to searching the web, to shopping for groceries online, to Skype-ing the grandkids abroad.

Are people still doing RAKnominations?
Excellent! Older people are at a loss due to our communities being broken down. This is an excellent venture keep it up!
It’s such a shame. Younger people have current knowledge and older people have wisdom. I suggest a trade.

Enda considers himself immune to hints, debate and democracy. His elected minions seem to think that once the election is over, that it’s perfectly acceptable to admit that they lied to get elected. I find this approach to be entirely unacceptable in a society that deems itself democratic, in name, principle and ultimately action. Now, I find myself struggling to remember the curses that our ancestors put upon these deadweight usurpers.
Enda need not worry about elections. He has a guaranteed place in Europe either way. That’s an even bigger trough to feed at.
Had the journal staff done a naked calendar for charity, I would have bought it. It would have been of more use to me than Enda and I’d likely know the money would be directed to the right place.
