#NoMakeupSelfie craze causes flood of donations to Irish Cancer Society

€200,000 in donations has been received over the past 24 hours.

THE IRISH CANCER Society has received an “exceptional” number of donations as a result of the No Make-up Selfie craze.

The trend is reported to have been started by crime novelist Laura Lippman, who tweeted a picture of herself without make-up after American actress Kim Novak was criticised for her appearance.

It has become associated with supporting cancer research since it went viral on social media earlier this week, with women (and men) posting selfies of themselves without make-up.

The Irish Cancer Society said it has received more than €200,000 in donations over the past 24 hours, noting that it has not directly related to any campaign currently being run by the charity.

“We are however, very grateful for any donations from the general public, including those coming from this source, as we rely on these donations to deliver our vital services,” a spokesperson said.

The majority of which has come through its textline.

Cancer Research UK also saw a surge in donations, raising close to €1,200,000, saying they were ‘overwhelmed by the incredible support’.

I don’t think you need to worry. The Irish Cancer Society was one of the most transparent in how it distributes it’s income. From what I remember the only excess was in a research professors elbow pads, but luckily there have been quite a few breakthroughs from Ireland, so keep giving!

it’s great that so much money has been raised, but I think, in fairness, the cancer charities in Ireland almost have a monopoly on donations when it comes to health. More people die of heart disease and stroke in Ireland each year than cancer and I wonder how much money the Irish Heart Foundation get compared to ICS. I think the main reason is emotional, you have to watch your loved one die slowly with cancer and go through a rough treatment programme, this pulls the heart strings (and why wouldn’t it) and people are far quicker to donate to such a cause. Whereas, with heart attacks and stroke it happens very quickly, sometimes without warning and the person is gone, no time for the friends or family to dwell on it. It seems like there’s a new cancer charity craze on social media every month now and I suppose what I’m saying is, it’d be nice to see other charities get a fair portion of donations.

I hope the majority of this money goes into funding research or support rather than more “awareness”

The awareness among women of breast cancer is kind of at maximum, we don’t need any more pink in the campaign, or chain statuses that tell you not to tell men what is going on – the people who need their awareness raised about breast cancer ARE men.

The more that these awareness campaigns focus on women the more they reinforce the mistaken assumption that breast cancer is a women’s disease. How many men think to check themselves regularly? How many men know the signs of breast cancer in themselves?
How many of these awareness campaigns are targeted at men?

Breast Cancer “awareness” is a joke.

50 years of research , untold $billions in monetary aid and the cancer rate has sky rocketed worldwide , http://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/cancer-cases-set-to-double-by-2040-1.1670069

The oncologists however have no difficulty in buying bigger houses and flashier cars ….but on the bright side , the cure awaits just around the next corner
The next time you are asked to donate to a cancer organisation, bear in mind that your money will be used to sustain an industry which has been deemed by many eminent scientists as a qualified failure and by others, as a complete fraud.

I have no doubt that dedicated people work in palliative care and right throughout the medical field but that is no excuse for blatant ignorance when faced with the realities and facts concerning cancer , the incidence of cancer has been steadily increasing for decades, a simple google search will confirm this to you. The cancer industry makes a good deal of noise about the fact that there has been some progress in the treatment of rare forms of cancer in children but the overall death rate from cancer just goes up and up. Chemotherapy does not work and has never worked for the cancers which kill nine out of ten cancer patients. Many patients given chemotherapy and classified as ‘cured’ go on to develop another cancer within a short period. The cancer establishment has insisted on sticking with radiotherapy and chemotherapy despite the fact that there is now so much evidence that these approaches do not work that ordinary patients who have no idea that there are alternatives are turning them down; preferring to die quietly and in peace rather than to die as a result of a painful and pointless treatment programme.

The only people who benefit from the modern cancer industry are doctors, drug companies and the people who make radiotherapy equipment.

The scientific community don’t look favorably on the efficacy of organisations like this at all…they are utterly inefficient and deliberately so. Most of the major advances in understanding cancers is completed by universities, not by research groups like this.

Just pop off there to for example the BMJ and look up the papers produced by CRUK or the ICS or any of these types of organisations… they publish base data… information about the effect of cancer OR they publish research that was already done and rehash it… the real work is done in the worlds universities… even then you’ll get your knuckles wrapped if you touch any of the commercial golden cows like the fast food industry, the pharma companies or say anything naughty that might lead to any serious advances.

To be honest its terrible…. and I admit that is a pessimistic thought…but clearly given your comment it works. There’s no money in an actual cure for the cancers out there… and the best cures would be to eliminate the causes…and we know what those are.

If you doubt that point to one advance from the research ICS have done in 50 years that was applied to lowering cancer rates… one would do…. and I’d be sure there are some, now look at what that cost, and the effect it had on the incidence of that cancer.

Its there to make you feel good, to make you think something is being done…. to give you hope and ensure that an actual research organisation does not emerge to actually study the cancer pandemic with a view to solving it…and something would be done if any actual research was being done.

It can’t be done of course because if any magical bullet emerged that lowered cancer rates significantly then at €100k or more to treat a dying patient the pharma industry would lose a bundle… who can make money out of healthy folks? There are 350k cases of cancer in the UK every year alone, the drug companies pull in close to 20 billion from that. You’d be out of your mind if you think anyone would want to stop that!

ICS know themselves that for example ecigs are an opportunity to consign tobacco to the bin once and for all…but they can’t say that, AND keep their corporate pharma donations at the same time.

Now that they know for a fact they can rely on the public and don’t have to rely on the evil hand of the pharma corporate donations maybe they will stop bad mouthing ecigs and vaping, start pointing the finger at the fast food giants and do as they are supposed to do… concern themselves with halting cancer!

They might try bad mouthing the fast food industry instead… theres a massive lack of information on their website. When you consider the huge rise in childhood diabetes, cancers, all sorts of health issues then why is the Irish Cancer Society not concerned with this problem?
