Tesco is looking at introducing Irish-speaking self-service checkouts

Mír gan choinne sa cheantar mála.

SUPERMARKET SHOPPERS MAY soon be able to use their cúpla focail as they shop.

Supermarket giant Tesco has confirmed that they are examining a plan that would see bi-lingual self-service checkouts installed in their 146 stores across the country.

A company spokesperson confirmed to TheJournal.ie that the plan was being looked into, but could not provide any other details. The spokesperson said that no timelines have been decided and that there had been no decisions on how many checkouts would be installed in each store if the plan was pursued.

Tesco operates a similar system in Wales, where their 74 stores can serve customers in Welsh.

The move comes after a successful pilot project in the Galway Shopping Centre branch, where signs and announcements are made in both languages, classes are held for staff and a designated Irish-speaking checkout is available.

The initiative has seen Tesco  nominated for an award by Gaillimh le Gaeilge, a group that works with Galway City Council, Galway Chamber and other groups to boost the Irish language in the county.

Tesco’s spokesperson said that the Galway experiment was well received by both shoppers and staff.

As per usual, Minister Ross is off partying with his feather boa and is nowhere to be seen other than on some Z-Lister’s Instagram page. They wouldn’t stand for this on the continent

@Sean Callan: the only way to resolve the issue is to sack a few of the maintenance staff who are responsible for the upkeep of the fleet. You can rest assured that the vast majority of these staff are on extended coffee breaks most of the day giving out about how they are not paid enough for drinking coffee. Not an easy task due to the solidarity of their comrades etc etc. Ransom specialists is all they are.

@Bertie Was Great: Not an employee, work for myself, and I am currently on holidays, which are of course, in my case, ‘unpaid’ (just using that word to help you understand). Congrats, you are 100% incorrect, 100%.

@Bewarethebeardz: Being on the dole is not the same as working for yourself. Some of us are flat out this week keeping the fledgling economy afloat! 100%

@Bertie Was Great: Just so we are clear, I’ve been working since i was 16 either for myself or as an employee. I’ve been lucky enough to have never needed the dole. And no, I have never received any handouts from anyone.
