Forest, who was found emaciated in a field. ISPCA

Emaciated ex-racehorse dumped in field left to die finds new home

The case of Forest is common one, said the ISPCA who will be talking about Forest and animal cruelty on RTE’s Prime Time this evening.

THE IRISH SOCIETY for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) is highlighting one of the familiar scenes they come across on a regular basis, an emaciated horse being left in a field to die.

ISPCA Inspector Kevin McGinley made the discovery when responding to a call from a concerned member of the public last October in the Lifford area, County Donegal.

Ex-racehorse

The horse, named Forest had a micro-chip which confirmed he was an ex-racehorse.

While his last registered owner was located, it was reliably established that Forest had been sold several years previous but his ownership never updated.

Efforts were made  to establish who had been responsible for his care in the period leading up to his discovery, but they were all unsuccessful.

Forest was taken to the ISPCA’s National Animal Centre in County Longford for rehabilitation where he required urgent dental and farrier treatment.

He was also suffering from rain scald, lice and had a severe worm burden.

Forest received the veterinary care he required and when he was rehabilitated and well enough to travel he was fostered by a woman in Williamstown, County Galway in January where he has been making a great recovery, said the ISPCA.

Prime Time

The case of Forest is to be featured on RTE’s Prime Time later tonight at 10.35pm.

The ISPCA is asking the people who care about horses to please donate €4 or make a monthly gift of €4 on which will help buy a bale of hay and feed a neglected equine just like Forest to enable the ISPCA to continue rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming the large number of animals who are in urgent need of care.

It’s odd to see a vulnerability described as a “feature”.
