TRANSPORT MINISTER LEO Varadkar has said he finds the garda issues that emerged over the last few days “confusing” and has admitted he has “difficulty getting my head around it at the moment”.
He said the whole situation is still evolving but that he hoped the Commission of Inquiry will establish the full facts, and welcomed a decision by the government to set up a garda authority.T
The Fine Gael minister said that Minister for Justice Alan Shatter will make a full statement and addressing concerns but declined to say if Shatter should withdraw remarks that the two garda whistleblowers did not cooperate with the penalty points investigation.
He said he “absolutely” had confidence in the Attorney General Marie Whelan and said that the Taoiseach has acted “extraordinary well” in dealing with the crisis.
Varadkar said he had a very productive meeting “one-to-one” with Shatter earlier this week and said the pair agreed a process to deal with road traffic issues but said there are “many other things happening here”.
Despite being asked repeatedly, the Minister declined to say whether he thought it was right that the Garda Commissioner retired yesterday.

I, too, have difficulty in “getting my head around it”. On the 1p.m. news today it appears that the Association of Garda Inspectors had no knowledge of recording going on in police stations. It also appears that rank and file Gardaí had no knowledge of recording going on in Police stations. In view of the fact that there is apparently a pile of over two thousand tapes, (garnered over a long period – to be fair), who was doing the recording and to whom were the tapes delivered for assessment?
That’s only tapes a lot more on digital format

Get your head around this Leo. FG’s pre election promise of a revolution in politics and proper transparency are now officially as believable as shatters performance in the dail this morning. Nobody believes him, nobody believes enda is still backing him and nobody believes your partys BS anymore.

Leo has no difficulty sitting on the fence though. How the hell can he have confidence in the AG who know about this since last November and said nothing or in Shatter who’s own officials apparently didn’t communicate with him?
Leo is the least fence-sitting of all mainstream politicians – even you have to give him that much.
It’s bloody easy to express contrary opinions when opposition is where you will always be.
I’m not in opposition I’m asking how he can have confidence in the AG or Shatter….
The AG didn’t tell shatter because he’s dangerous…well that’s assuming they are telling the truth.
This thing would be dead and buried if not for Leo Varadkar, so he deserves credit for that if nothing else.
Leo Varadkar would be an excellent Toaiseach because he said openly that Callinan should say sorry when his own boss Enda couldn’t! I am sure if he says Shatter should resign then he’ll have no choice but to resign. We are still for him to say this anytime!
Varadkar should take over from Kenny.

before people run away with the praise for leo,,he has come out in support of shatter and ag and would not comment on wether shatter should apologise to whistle blowers and remove his comments from dail record…so leo has been put back in his box with a few clatters from kennys boot boys reilly and hogan to put manners on him….so yes if you think he is a future leader you are correct as he has no balls which seems to be the key attribute to gaining fg leadership……wagons been circled round shatter/ag and do not expect any correction to dail records by shatter any time soon…

I wouldn’t hold my breath for the report. A lot of document shredding can be done in the two months that have been spent waffling over who should apologise to who.
