The Daily Fix: Tuesday

All the news of the day you might have missed…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

  • The Royal Visit: Well, where else would we start? Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh are spending their first evening on Irish soil tonight after beginning a historic four-day State Visit. The Queen wore green for her arrival, travelling to Áras an Uachtaráin where she was met by President McAleese and Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
  • The Queen later travelled to the Garden of Remembrance in Parnell Square, amid heavy security presence, where the British Monarch joined the President in laying wreathes to honour those who gave their lives for the pursuit of Irish independence. In the protests that occurred on the fringes of the visit, (at least) 20 people were arrested, while the Royal Couple went to view the Book of Kells at Trinity College.
  • Meanwhile, a controlled explosion was carried out on an “elaborate hoax” device left in Fairview.
  • The world’s press have been catching onto the historical nature of the visit, as you’ll see from our slideshow – but if you’re after a more light-hearted tack, you might be more interested in our pick of the choice tweets of the day.
  • Some of the protests didn’t go quite as well as their organisers might have expected – as this awkward video of protesters failing to set a Union Flag on fire demonstrates.
  • Have today’s events made you wish Ireland had a monarchy of its own? Our Fantasy Monarchy polls might be right up your street.

As Shaw’s Caesar observes: “Taxes are the chief business of the conqueror of the world.”
Some of us, prior to Lisbon 1 and 2, were pointing this out. Above the sound of scaremongering intimidation and threat from the Satraps and The Pontius Pilates.
Supposed we’re lucky we weren’t crucified, that being the usual fate of those who stand between Caesar and the changers of money and sellers of doves and their taxes.

@Charles Williams: it’s not just the multinationals paying 12.5%. We have a small family run business, if we were paying more than the current rate there are times we wouldn’t have survived. It was a struggle to come up with the 12.5%. On paper it says you are making x,y and z but the reality is that between stock, debtors and the costs of developing your business the profit is eaten up. Raising our rate will destroy many homegrown small companies.

@Micheal S. O’ Ceilleachair: that is exactly the point that Macron was making, and missed here. If the 12.5% rate was applied uniformly, then there would be no issue, but Ireland is making, essentially money laundering, under the table deals with foreign banks and industries to give them access to European trade routes. France also regularly is cited for anti competitive behaviour, but the difference is they accept it and pay the fine, whereas our gimps put the country at even more risk by fighting it. If Apple etc can effectively money launder at 0.8%, then offer it to all EU companies (including Irish) and it will be fair, otherwise we are a selective tax haven, and the whole EU that plays fair loses out.

@Soccer T’s: You’re correct in that we are overly reliant on multi-nationals (U.S. particularly), but it’s a strategy that has drastically improved our job numbers, living standards, GDP per capita, etc. What we need to do is diversify a bit – create more Irish multinationals (like Ryanair) and become the EU HQ for other non-English speaking companies (from China & other emerging economies). To do this, we will need a strong new strategy beginning with a shake-up in our languages education.

Seeing as Sarkozy didn’t manage to coerce Ireland into raising corp tax at our lowest point in existence, I’d doubt strongly that Macron will be able to. Especially in the global climate of decreasing corporate tax rates.

Ah look the headline is misleading. What he said was for an equal tax europe. To avoid such issues such as apple. But my fellow commenters please take note. What ireland did regarding apple was ILLIGAL under european law. End of story. If you want to change that then lets go irexit! THINK!

France has an effective tax rate of 8%. Mr Macron is trying to have his cake and eat it. At least in Ireland we say what we mean.

We have the eu treatys and with other countries to, all people should make governments take tax equally if Ireland didn’t give a good rate they go else where. These big corporations paid a fairer share we be better off at the moment we work for them they still pay us badly yet we pay the short fall of there un paid tax.

Politicians are in the business of getting voted in. If they don’t lie they don’t get in, and that’s because the electorate comprises mostly of fools who, despite being lied to repeatedly will still do business with these thieves and liars. It’s quite simple when you think about it.
