INDEPENDENT TD PATRICK Nulty’s resignation from the Dáil last weekend has been somewhat overshadowed by events this week, but he formally submitted that resignation on Monday.
Nulty announced his resignation as a TD for Dublin West last Saturday after it emerged he had sent inappropriate and explicit Facebook messages to a 17-year-old girl. More revelations have emerged in recent days.
It was reported that Nulty did try to tender his resignation via email to the office of the Ceann Comhairle earlier in the week, but was told he must do it in a letter which was sent and received by the office of Seán Barrett on Monday.
Nulty has resigned under the Dáil’s Standing Order 174 which states that any member of the Dáil may voluntarily resign his or her membership thereof by notice in writing to the Ceann Comhairle:

No disrespect to those who received his shocking messages but while I believe he should have resigned, I think this guy has more problems than malice. No one in their right mind could have expected to get away with what he did. Poor guy is obviously deluded. I for one hope he gets the help he needs and can make something of his life. While I accept his actions have shocked others, he is by far his own biggest victim.
Hes definitely deluded if he thinks he can get away with a comb-over in 2014….

It is a pity that he wasn’t as economic with words in his texts’ as he is with his letter.
Immediate effect from when? I see no date on the letter!!
Date is inconsequential, immediate effect means as soon as the letter came into existence (or at least as soon as it was handed over to the appropriate person). Plus it was then date stamped with a receipt date, so take that as your date if you really need one.
I wonder if he’d waited a day or two more to resign, would the revelations about Garda-gate, the Commissioner and Shatter have made him rethink resigning?
I wonder is there more to come? Did he ever go further than just messaging these young girls?
I think the most disturbing thing about this case is how is this guy the same age as the late Cory Monteith of Glee fame.
I know politics can age people but wtf?..
He’s obviously suffered bad burning to his face ffs, at least give him a break from that angle…
He suffered burns in a house fire when he was a few weeks old.
