THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION, a committee formed from regular citizens, politician, social activists and other stakeholders, has released its initial recommendations.
The convention, which is touted as the first of its kind in the world, has recommended a reduction of the voting age to 16, removing references to the role of women in the home and making gender equality in politics a constitutional guarantee.
They say that the following issues should be prioritised:
They also recommend a provision that guarantees same sex marriage, which will be voted on next year.
Voting rights was a major topic, with the convention recommending that the smallest constituency in the country be a five-seater, as well as an end to alphabetical listing of candidates.
They also recommend longer polling hours, the introduction of non-parliamentary ministers and votes for the diaspora in presidential elections.
The reference to blasphemy should also be removed from the constitution, as well as a host of changes to the Dáil.
Speaking today at the launch of the convention’s report, Tom Arnold, Chairman of the Convention on the Constitution, said:
“It has been an immense privilege for my fellow Convention members and I to have participated in this innovative and historic process. Our work may lead to changes in our Constitution, the document which reflects the values and aspirations of our society and defines and guarantees our rights as citizens.
“Back in December 2012 when the Convention was launched I noted that in some of our public discourse, there is a cynicism and a sense of alienation which is unhealthy for our society and, ultimately, dangerous for our democracy.”

Let’s forget about selecting an electable candidate and policies that might resonate with the voters.
Let’s not worry about trying to persuade the non aligned or anti Trump Republicans to actually vote Democrat in November.
No, let’s just “wipe out his fan base”, a euphemism for killing the 63 million people who voted for President Trump in 2016, and then we’ll win.
Not that such an idea will get any pushback from the moderators here.

I think he’s well aware of the possibility of spread. But I think he figures those cases will be so dispersed around the US that he won’t be held responsible. Very hard to prove it came from the rally itself too so he has a built-in defense.
So he probably doesn’t care if ppl get it, more whether the blame will land at his door.

The Dems think it’s perfectly Ok to have demonstrations and riots throughout America and Trump wants to hold mass rallies with an eye on November.
Our lot may not be up to much but they don’t look so bad by comparison.
@Will: pretty sure no democrat has said riots are OK and they have also advised anybody protesting to do so peacefully and with a mask on. What’s the betting masks wil be frowned upon at the Trump rally
@Dave O’Keeffe: Several of the leading democrats support the removal of the historical statues in honour of the military leaders on the confederate side in the civil war which is part of the agenda of the rioters at present.
It is also a well know fact that the main financial backer of the democratic party is financially supporting the rioters. Governors Cuomo, blackface Northam, Inslee, Newsom and Whitmer are the public face of that party and all support full term abortions.
