TV3 says it is not laying off all of its staff

It will, however, hope to move on less than ten staff.

BROADCASTER TV3 SAYS that reports that it is looking to lay off its entire workforce are inaccurate.

Reports in today’s newspapers suggest that all staff have been offered voluntary redundancy, with reports saying that it is a sign that the company is in trouble.

However, a spokesperson for TV3 told TheJournal.ie that the company offers staff voluntary redundancy every year in order to ensure flexibility and avoid the company becoming overstaffed.

The spokesperson added that there are only two departments who are being offered the deal and indications are that less than 10 people will be let go.

Every year TV3 runs limited VL programmes to get turnover in areas where we want some flexibility to move people.

“This is HR best practice.

“In this instance the opportunity to apply for VL is opened to two departments and no one has yet been accepted. We expect a very small number of people to get a VL package”.

TV3 has come under pressure with the imminent arrival of UTV to Irish shores, taking a host of TV3′s flagship shows.

The announcement that Sky had picked up a GAA package previously held by TV3 increased speculation around the station’s future.

While RTE still pay their staff millions, paid for by us. There should be a level playing field where TV3 get some of the license fee that we are forced to pay.

RTE’s funding by taxpayers, was a breach of unfair practice and breach of EU Laws. I would’ve thought, they have an unfair advantage over other privately operated companies and should be challenged in court!

In the UK only BBC gets the licence fee but can’t show ads because of this. Here RTE do both. TV3 are able to survive on just ads so RTE should do the same or the licences money should be given to TV3 also.

In the UK, BBC can afford to survive on the licence fee because the population is much bigger. In Ireland RTE have a smaller amount of people paying the licence fee, and there is mass evasion, so they have to advertise to make up the difference

“RTE’s funding by taxpayers, was a breach of unfair practice and breach of EU Laws.”

Actually, it’s not in breach of EU law.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_News_%28TV_channel%29#History

“Sky News objected to the breaking of its monopoly, complaining about the costs associated with running a channel that only a minority could view from the licence fee. Sky News claimed that a number of British cable operators had been incentivised to carry News 24 (which, as a licence-fee funded channel was made available to such operators for free) in preference to the commercial Sky News. However, in September 1999 the European Commission ruled against a complaint made by Sky News that the publicly funded channel was unfair and illegal under EU law. The Commission ruled that the licence fee should be considered state aid but that such aid was justified due to the public service remit of the BBC and that it did not exceed actual costs.”

Come on, the VinB programme and the presenters on it is a great break from the baby food style of presenting we’ve been fed on RTE for donkey’s years.
Considering the money RTE gets from the license fee plus all the advertising they carry and sponsorships its quite incredible how low their standard of programming is. They are on a track for wanting numbers to feed advertising stats when they should be on a remit for quality. If TV3 demonstrated an aptitude for quality then there is no way RTE should be allowed to grab all the public money for producing trash.

My fear a Amphroai is for the denouement of your ratiocination – with such a smorgasbord of cultural and harmonious stimulants to hand you have elected to direct your prodigious mental aptitude into the sulcation of the masses. I’m sure that the pastoral discourse of ‘Norris’ and ‘Tracy Barlow’ are above reproach but please tell me there is a mere sojourn at twilight for the dulcet intonations of Keats, Yeats or Joyce? be sooner rather than later. This is what happens when you’re content to run others channels productions and staff lack any innovation whatsoever. Good riddance!

Doesn’t “redundancy” have a meaning in employment law – it means the job no longer exists. You can’t offer someone redundancy, then fill the position that’s been vacated with someone else on lower wages. Are TV3 claiming repayment of some of the redundancy packages from the state?
