Ryanair warns of 'car promo' email scam

The budget airline warns of an email scam advising people to pay for the delivery of a car “won” in a scratchcard competition.

RYANAIR HAS ASKED the public to be wary of an email scam attempting to dupe recipients into paying a delivery charge for a car it claims that user has won in a promotional draw.

The dodgy email informs its recipient that they have won a car through an in-flight scratchcard promotion – apparently capitalising on a ‘printing error’ which last month saw three people on one flight each win a car worth €13,000.

Recipients are advised that the car can only be delivered upon the payment of a £500 (€567) delivery fee – in a line that is curiously slapped into the middle of a less-than-flattering news story, evidently lifted from the Daily Telegraph, discussing Ryanair’s ancilliary charges.

A copy of the scam email can be seen here.

In a statement this afternoon, Ryanair advised recipients - who may not ever have flown with the airline - that passengers can only claim victory of a car through the promotion if they revealed a scratchcard with the correct symbols and then contacted the promotion operators Brandforce.

"Anyone receiving this or any other scam email claiming they have won a free car should refer the issue to Ryanair," the statement concluded.

Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said it was "disgraceful that these criminals try to turn three people's good luck into other people's misfortune".

The airline has contacted the UK's Consumer Direct agency in connection with the hoax.

That poor mother, and also the person who made the blinds. Despite it being in no way her fault, I imagine – if it were me – she’s feeling a huge amount of pain too. As a mother, I don’t know how other mothers go on functioning after losing a child, other than for the remaining children. Absolutely heartbreaking

I’d have no blinds or anything with a cord dangling around the place now, for a stupid decoration it just isn’t worth it. They took preventative measures but it wasn’t enough, poor child.

@Simon Peters: there was a safety latch. The child strangled on the cord a the back of the blind that they never imaged would be a problem. No dangling cords no carelessness. Just a tragic accident and very sad.

I teach sewing and knitting. I will not allow anything to be made in class with a cord longer than 15cm. Ever! Even if it’s only for a hope with no kids. None negotiable.

But there are many blogs and sites that show how to make these projects and don’t cover the risks.

I always remember ‘Thats life’ on BBC in the 1990s covering the risks.

    Tragic, tragic situation.

Tragic accident made even worse by the ” are we to blame” undertone in the words coming from the mother. How can any parent have anticipated such a thing happening and taken proactive steps to ensure it didnt. Horrible tragedy. No one is to blame.
