Teams detect three underwater signals in search for missing plane

More ships and planes were diverted to the area in the Indian Ocean today to investigate whether they could have come from the plane’s black box.

SHIPS SEARCHING THE vast Indian Ocean for a Malaysian airliner have detected three separate underwater signals.

More ships and planes were diverted to the area today to investigate whether they could have come from the plane’s black box.

Angus Houston, head of the Australian search mission, said the detections were being taken “very seriously” as time ticked down on the battery life of the black box’s tracking beacons.

He said China’s Haixun 01 vessel has twice detected an underwater signal on a frequency used for the plane’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders — once for 90 seconds on Saturday and another more fleeting “ping” on Friday a short distance away.

A third “ping” was also being scrutinised, 300 nautical miles away in the Indian Ocean.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 with 239 people aboard vanished on 8 March during a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

“This is an important and encouraging lead but one which I urge you to continue to treat carefully,” Houston told reporters.

We are working in a very big ocean and within a very large search area.
Speculation and unconfirmed reports can see the loved ones of the passengers put through terrible stress and I don’t want to put them under any further emotional distress at this very difficult time.

The search

Earlier, Houston said Australian ship Ocean Shield — also equipped with a black box locator — and Australian air force planes were being diverted to the area to help discount or confirm the Chinese signals.

Australia Malaysia Plane The Australian navy ship Ocean Shield Rob Griffith / AP Photo Rob Griffith / AP Photo / AP Photo

Ocean Shield was also investigating the signal it detected on Sunday in its current location, about 300 nautical miles north of Haixun 01, in waters far off Australia’s west coast.

Houston said the Chinese finding was more promising.

“I think the fact that we’ve had two detections, two acoustic events in that location, provides some promise which requires a full investigation,” he said.

Time running out

The hunt for the jet was refocused on the southern end of the search zone today after corrected satellite data showed it was more likely the plane entered the water there.

Houston said the Haixun 01 was already operating in that more southerly zone.

Some analysts greeted the acoustic detections with optimism, saying a 37.5 kHz signal can only be transmitted by an emergency beacon. But others were sceptical and said it was vital to find supporting evidence.

Houston said Haixun 01 was in waters about 4.5 kilometres deep, meaning “any recovery operation is going to be incredibly challenging and very demanding and will take a long period of time” if the plane is found there.

Houston said time was critical.

This is Day 30 of the search and the advertised time for the life of the batteries in the beacon is 30 days. Sometimes they last for several days beyond that — say eight to 10 days beyond that — but we’re running out of time in terms of the battery life of the emergency locator beacons.

Up to 10 military planes, two civil aircraft and 13 ships were scouring the remote waters on Sunday, concentrating on about 216,000 square kilometres (86,400 sq miles) of the Indian Ocean around 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) northwest of Perth.

Houston insisted that China was “sharing everything that’s relevant to this search” with the lead authority, and sidestepped questions over the Haixun 01′s location far from the other lead vessels in the search.

“China has seven ships out there, that’s by far the largest fleet of ships out there. I think we should be focusing on the positives,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur more than 2,000 people including relatives held an emotional mass prayer today for the safety of the passengers.

Just so it’s clear: the map was made by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to give an idea of the scale of the search area today. We’d probably have noticed if we’d actually moved south of the Equator.

Two black boxes on an aircraft (one data and one voice recorder). Both boxes have their own pinger. Two pulse signals picked up by Chinese across Friday and Saturday using surface rods with receivers, which are prone to interference from other vessels transmitting test signals in the search area. It’s a little like fishing for a large fish using a stick, and a string with a bait on the end. Sure, you just might be lucky, but the elements, size and depth of the ocean is against you. The third pulse signal was picked up by an Australian vessel 350 miles away. None have been verified.

The ship that arrived today has more sophisticated equiptment and will submerge a receiver way down into the ocean and tow it on a cable. It operates a lot closer to the seabed and is less prone to mis-signals and interference.

We’d know if there was another plane missing, equipted with black boxes, and the signal on a black box only works (if entact) for roughly 30 days. Some have been known to last longer – 40+ days in extreme circumstances. Picking up a black box signal in a deep ocean (the current area is 4400-15000 deep) and subject to underwater valleys, troughs, ridges and plateaus that can interfere with the quality of the received signal. Also, some experts argue that whales can even emit signals underwater that can be wrongly received. I don’t know if that is true or not. What we need is a report from one of the search vessels that the have repeatedly recorded a consistent series of one-second pings at 37.5khz in one specific area, using submerged receivers at depth, not just from surface hydraphone receivers, which the Chinese were using. Until that happens, we are unlikely to see mini remote subs deployed with camera equiptment.

So the Americans have a ship that travels faster than any other can carry a 777 and can sail it through a massive search involving ships and planes of multiple navies & air forces.

Frank a plane can disappear if 1) all tracking beacons are turned off which appears to have happened here and 2 if it is flown on a course/ altitude that is outside of radar coverage. Stealth aircraft take advantage of radar black spots as part of their strategy to remain invisible.

You were very definite that the plane and bodies were leaving Diego Garcia on a ship last week you even posted a requisition request?? Now Diego Garcia is an ETOPS emergency sight so covered by commercial radar, intersat are a non government I dependant company and they say it was on a course in the Indian Ocean.

Agree with you, Paul. There is no way now this was an accident. The early theories of fire or depressure have gone out the window. This was an aircraft guided on various altitudes, paths by manual input down into the Indian Ocean. If it was a hijack, then it is one of the most sophisticated ever carried out. The ability to not just control an aircarft, but understand cockpit control, redial settings to the FMS, avoid radar, and understand fuel consumption is far beyond what we encountered with 911. Even a pilot under threat and duress, knows how to compromise those threats and trick hijackers into guiding a plane into an area that increases the chances of detection and survival. The hijacked Ethopian jet was a perfect example of that some years ago. This plane did everything possible to avoid detection and place the aircraft into a very inhospital area deliberately.

It just seems a means to a end, without purpose. Hijackers want purpose and attention, not to disappear without notice. A good pilot, will do everything he/she can to bring notice to an aircraft under distress, even with all communications off.

It leaves with me with one conclusion. Whoever flew MH370 into the Indian Ocean – did not want to be found easily.

The amusing thing about the conspiracy pundits that you get your “information” from is that the only sources of information they have is TV news and newspapers.

Then they put their spin on it to try and make it fit their “everything’s a conspiracy” agenda. When/if wreckage is found and the investigators figure out what happened the conspiracy theorists will forget about it and move on to something else.

Remember the 2012 hype? Loads of speculative videos were removed from YouTube after nothing happened (out of embarrassment). The same is true for the expected attack on the 2012 Olympics.

Still astounds me how a plane can be lost without trace & just if’s,buts & maybes surrounding it.
I hope the families get the answers they’re looking for & maybe in a more dignified way than a text.

The very least that can come out of this tragedy is that tracking and finding plane crashes will become a more refined procedure. Rip.

The pilots wife left him for another man,so he just lost the plot and did a suicide massacre simple as that…the passengers couldn’t contact family on there phones as they were to far away from any satellite phone signals and he crashed it into the ocean so in theory it was the pilots fault…like why would the last words he had with base be good night from mh370 he knew what he was doing as you don’t say that to radio control as I’ve understood from documentarys
